That's how I feel about all half ton trucks ?.

For the money the F150 is hard to beat. If they would offer the heavy duty payload package in a supercab 6.5" bed I would have one. Payload is why I'll probably end up with a 3/4 eventually.

I like that @AbleGuy has two threads going about what truck to get next ?

For all these guys looking for real "overland" full size trucks there really isn't much better than a Powerwagon with regular 2500 rear coils and spacers to bring the height back up. Good ride with all the offroad and payload capability one could want. Half tons just aren't enough truck for camping with a family.

Half tons are way more than enough truck to camp with an entire family. You just can't bring the entire 4 Wheel Parts inventory, 37 cast iron skillets, and three cords of fire wood along for the haul

They are if you keep it stock and camp out of the REI backpacking catalog. But who does that? People want Campchef grills, Kodiak Canvas tents, big tires, etc. That's the point of having a truck instead of a Jeep. All of a sudden your 1500# payload leaves 300# for people.

That's "glamping" not camping...haha.

A stove and a canvas tent is glamping? Ok then. So be it.

But really who cares what other people bring. There’s no benefit to being uncomfortable. Uncomfortable is just dumb.

Carrying enough camping gear to exceed the limits of a 1/2 ton truck is glamping...lol.

There are lots of half tons with 1300# of payload. Upsized AT tires will eat 100# of that. A family of 4 will eat another 400+. Guy wants a camper top add another 300#. It happens quick and isn’t hard.

As a guy who ownes a 1/2 ton with a load rating like you mentioned...I don't come anywhere close to exceeding it when I go camping.

Buuuut I also have no need to bring 25 gallons of water, two spare tires, a weeks worth of fire wood, an entire shops worth of tools, enough recovery gear to get out a tank, 12v fridge, two deep cycle batteries, heavy and overly complexed tent, or any of the other expo "necessities"...lol. I might bring 100 pounds of gear with me when I tent camp...and that's being pretty generous.

In all honesty, I can camp quite comfortably and not exceed the GVW of a Honda 919. ;-)

I’ll just say my 1/2 ton has more payload than a Powerwagon!

I usually bring a full size canvas tent, stove, bikes, chairs, tables, everything short of a full on camper. Never have needed more than 2k lbs. Including the kids. We usually head out for a weekend but sometimes several days.

If I ever get a toy hauler or 5th wheel, I’ll go 1 ton.

Agreed. If a 6.4 Powerwagon was in my budget I would have bought it. It would have lockers and better mpgs than my Tundra!

Tundra doesn’t have a rear locker available (only LSD/ATRAC).
Tundra has a 38 gal tank
They have integrated brake controller

What cab configuration has the 38 gallon tank? GM trucks are available with a big tank - but only in the single cab long bed.

But that’s the great thing about Ford. You can piece meal everything even on the lower trims. You want a rear locker on an XL? No prob. 36 gallon tank? 3.73 gears? Add it all on. Toyota is package only deal.

Ram is better yet, Ford still locks a lot of things into packages.

"Oh, you want the nicer radio... not in an XL" type of crap. Ram is a lot more open.

Aluminum body (no rust / 700lbs lighter than the previous gen steel)
E-locker (don't know if that is available on Tundra or if you have to order a special package or not)
Integrated trailer brake control and trailer back-up control
10 speed transmission
20+ MPG on the highway, 18 - 19 in the city
36 gallon tank (the combination of these two features gives me easily a 600+ mile range when not towing.)
Keypad for entry (Ford has had this for more than 20 years on their cars and trucks, it's amazing to me that they are the only ones. I use mine all the time and love it.)

Aluminum bodies go away in new and different ways. I was looking at a B-36 bomber at a museum from inside the bomb bay, the bottom fuselage panels was full of pinholes from water collecting on it when it was sitting outside. Salty air from living near the ocean is horrible for aircraft too. And they don't actually touch salt water (well some do but that is usually a one time thing)

How it works on a truck remains to be seen but aluminum is not immune to what kills steel... moisture and salt. Can't just borrow your buddies wire welder to fix it either. I know the aluminum hood on my F-150 is really good at showing hail dents...

Well then...I wonder how we ever survived taking a 1977 Chevy Luv camping when I was a kid? ?
Because you were a kid. I used a pos efi VW Squareback in Baja briefly before replacing it with an F-250.

Lot of support for those from Carli.
