Trump's 03 Tacoma

Back-up Camera

I finished up installing the back-up cam on the truck not too long after getting the flip-pac on the truck. I had picked up a camera months earlier as shown in this post:

It could be flush mounted and had built in IR LEDs for a night mode. I took a look at the flip-pac and contemplated how I was going to flush mount it above the hatch, but didn't feel comfortable about doing it. Punching a 1-1/8" hole in the new shell had me second guess how smart that would be long term, so I looked for another place. Putting it on the bumper severely limited its wide angle view in almost every location, so I looked elsewhere. I finally decided on mounting it inside the glass with a bracket. I made a nice bracket out of aluminum for it, mounted it in place, and discovered the IR LEDs and tinted glass didn't get along. They would turn on at night and block the view with a wicked reflection off the glass. I had to find another camera. I ended up finding another camera that was much smaller since it did not need to be waterproof or have LEDs.

Much smaller...

I mounted it on a small lip on the frame for the rear glass.

Left enough wire for it to open but still look tidy.

...And my new view out the rear.

Truck looks great with the new addition man, congrats! I wish I already had another truck. I would take that rack in an instant.

Thanks! Speaking of your ideal rigs... How's the project coming?

Its moving along man. I was able to drive the 4runner with the flip-pac to my folks house for the night. In the morning i start the fiberglassing and sealing up of everything. Then its maiden voyage back to LA. Really happy with how things are coming along.

Nice looking camera! Who makes the smaller one you eventually went with, and what did it cost?

I've been enjoying the updates in your build thread. I'm really looking forward to the finished project.

It's a generic camera sold under the name DP Video.

Cheap camera that won't break the bank if it fails.

The final piece of the puzzle is coming together for the flip-pac interior build. More planning, measuring, and (hopefully) some sketch-up models being done this weekend. More to follow.
