watertight boxes.....

Let us know how they work out - they look pretty rugged and I wouldn't mind using them in my CDN M101.

x2, but I still didn't really care for the dark green bottom section that I saw at Academy. I'd rather they were a little more heat-tolerant color. I tried painting the lids of mine a while back, but the automotive spray paint I used didn't adhere well for long and the applied color just wasn't right. More yellowish than desert-camo. I'm gonna try some Krylon Fusion Camo paint next (4291 Khaki).

The best thing that will stick to plastic is a vinyl dye used in auto interiors. I have been out of the biz for a while so I don't know if there is anything newer. Maybe a base of the dye down first and go over it with a color. I would "wash" it with a laquer thinner to "open up pores" (but be quick and use only a little thinner) first too. Then maybe a clearcoat (I am a firm believer in them) over the top.

Check out the medical supply carriers about 1/2 way down the page. $50 a piece is cheap. Watertight, aluminum, 6 latches. Guy is located in Fresno, CA.

Those aren't bad prces.

Weel the ones I ended up with didn't do too bad on our trip. They went through a lot of rain a couple times and I didn't find any big amounts of water in them and they were on the roof. Some dust did get in but it was tolerable too. The bins do seem a little too flimsy to my tastes though.

I have used two Owens Products diamond plate aluminum ATV boxes on the roof rack of my LJ for four and a half years. They carry recovery gear, trash bags, spares, a machette, tools, you name it...

The boxes feature locks and padle latches like a pick up tool box and gas strut lid supports (one of each of the above per box.) I thought they might leak, but the have stayed dry in even the heaviest of down pours while I'm driving 70mph, in feet of snow, through the truck wash, etc.

The boxes are attractive in appearence, offerred in bright aluminum and black powder coat (which has held up without flaw on mine) and offered in three sizes, small, medium and large. The boxes themselves are relatively light.

The ones I use are the smalls @ 32"lx12"wx6"h. They are bolted to my rack through the bottoms with rubber grommets for seals.

Medium boxes measure 34"lx12"wx9"h; large boxes measure 35"lx12"wx12.5"h.

I plan on using something similar...I like the low profile and all metal construction...should work nice on my new platform rack

Has anyone used one of these Contico Pro Tuff bins? It felt pretty sturdy in the store. I was looking for 3 or 4 boxes similar to this one that will fit nicely in my CDN M101. May head out and pick up some of these unless someone has some negative experiences.

When deploying to Iraq last time, everyone in our unit was given one of those as a makeshift footlocker to ship overseas in advance of our arrival. They are very sturdy, but a bit heavy and bulky for overlanding, unless you have a trailer or large vehicle. I definitely would not consider it for a roof load. I much prefer smaller boxes for everything. They are more modular in loading options, which allows for betters space, and fully loaded, smaller boxes are easier to manage. Having a big box that is hard to move around (for example, to get at something behind them) is just not fun on a trip.

Seahorse cases.... cheaper and better quality than pelican and storm. I have a friend thats a dealer for seahorse he said he can do a group buy discount if I get all the sizes that people want. Post up and let me know.

Think about this. The US Military uses Storm and Pelican cases. Do you think they would choose inferior cases or the best there are?
Just a thought.

well think of WD-40 and pelican...... there are way better lubricators out there but the brand that comes to mind for 95% of the people is WD 40 why?? because of marketing. Pelican does make a good storage box but it doesnt mean they are the best (just expensive IMO) why does the mil. use them they could have got a good deal on them who knows, regardless I'm not here to push any single brand it doesnt matter to me what brand you buy I simply made an offer for some good storage boxes....... if you would like a price go to there site pick a size/style and post back and I'll give him a call and see what he says.

Probably not exactly 'watertight', but...

I saw that as well, but clamping force of the latch didn't inspire much confidence to me. They do have another new series, the ToughCase, that is more sturdy, more $$, and I didn't see them at Home Depot - http://www.dewalt.com/tool-categories/hand-tools-storage-and-work-support.aspx
Looks like maybe they're made to stack together, they have a gasketed lid also, but the latches look to be a better clamping style. Their specs look good as far as load handling and size, but I'm not so sure about the dolly-thing. Still, it's nice to have another option out there.

I may be interested in a couple of black SE720's (empty with plastic locks).

Looks like Rattler was interested in a SE1220.

The best prices I've found so far are at this site below ($54.58 for the SE720 described above):

Let me know what you find out from your friend. I'm in no rush, these are going to end up on a KLR650 this spring.

Thanks, Alan
