what did you do to your trailer today?

Bought an aluminum Diamond plate box off craigslist today.
It will be mounted on the front of the trailer to store my gear.
It is a nice large size, water proof and lockable. I got a good deal for $40.00.

Looks like a great coating, what do you use to mask the edges?
regular tape or does it need to have an embedded wire to cut a line?

Hey Mark. I actually did not mask this at all, I cut it in with a brush where needed and rolled up close to mask the brush strokes. If you want to or need to mask, you can simply use good quality painters tape, and paint sections at a time removing the masking as you complete a section. The simply re-mask for the second coat. If you let it dry with the liner on it, it would likely be a BEYOTCH to get it off. It dries quickly as it is catalyzed and it starts to set up in about 60 minutes. I added a smidge of MEK yesterday at about the 45 minute mark as it was hot and muggy, which kicks it off quicker. Today was cool and raining, so it dried more more slowly. I would have let the coating dry for 15 min and then pulled the tape.

I rolled sections at a time and backrolled it to a lower profile texture than some might, this will not see heavy use hauling rocks and junk, just camping gear etc, so a really gnarly surface profile was not as necessarry. I am going to paint the front of the tub over the Monstaliner with the finish coat I am using on the rest of the tub. I just wanted to protect it from rock chips and damage. It was peppered with chips, which is why I took it basically to bare metal up there.

Final coat.

Honestly, I took my time on the first coat, and I really debated leaving it with one. It would have easily stood up and looked great. In the end, do it once and do it right, so I opted for the 2 coats as recommended. In the end, I am glad I did as it hides all of the imperfections now!

Next step, fenders off, stripped and possibly widened and then mount the lid and tub paint. So close.

A few updates since my last post on this build. I spent 20 minutes re-furbishing the triangle reflectors on the rear of the trailer. Sand, mask, paint a few coats of semi-gloss black.

These are one of my favorite parts of these trailers, and they are nearly impossible to find. Next I spent some time working on the fenders, the tub and the prep for paint. I decided to strip the fenders, they were beat pretty hard, and the paint was in terrible shape. I used Circa 1850 gel stripper, works like a hot damn!

I then ripped the fenders off the trailer, removed the seam sealer, and sanded the bejeasus out of the bare metal. Ready for paint.

I primed them with more POR15 then decided to bedline them once I saw how pitted they were. They turned out great!! I also beadlined the arch under the fenders, and the underside of the fenders as well, this will stop the rust and rock chips.

finish of the bedliner with a small 4" foam roller is great, nice and uniform with a nice texture.

I have now also finish sanded the tub exterior, and primed the entire thing with the last of the POR15 I have. I need to pick up another can for the underside of the trailer! I am now ready for the Interlux one component Polyurethane, which I am stoked about. SO close. It looks finished now, and looks awesome black, but I am sticking to the red colour scheme and thing it will look stellar with the Cherokee. No pics, it was dark when I finished and I was painting with a halogen work lamp.

Oh and I also picked up my lid from Mike. Popped it on, and man what a snug perfect fit. This thing weighs like 50 pounds and is super strong...cant wait to mount the tent!

Also bought an awning from Mike too, the CVT one. Will be mounting that on the Jeep basket rack ASAP.

More tomorrow!

Greg: Great work! The fenders came out very nice.

Thanks Mark. I decided to leave the dents in them, and most of the blemishes in the tub as well. I figure that this is surplus, was used in the military and has earned its scars, so I will leave them. Fixing all the rust and anything that will fail in time, other than that... she will be a 10 footer (looks great from 10 feet, up close, a little rough and dented).

Spent an hour filling the wee marks and bubbles in the epoxy on the top yesterday. LOVE the glazing putty. Lots of sanding to do on that now too, but it will be worth it in the end. The tent mounts directly to the lid, so the top doesnt have to be perfect, but I am still filling as much as I can.

so want this to be over soon. The underside will only get a once over this year, will work on that next year in the spring before camping season. Probably going to install electric brakes too, all set up for it, why not right?

Brought it home to its new Garage. My wife did back into the trailer while I was trying to
pick up the garage. No big damadge just a little fender bender, literally. I took the old wiring harness
off and am starting to install a new one to match the factory plug in my Tacoma.

You did a great job. " I would have painted it RED " but it looks great!

Oh the Red is coming alright. I have a nice new can of Interlux Brightsides Flame Red in the garage ready to start applying tomorrow. I picked up all the bolts and bits to remount the fenders etc, and the lid has been glazed and sanded out ready for paint. Lid, tub are red, fenders, frame and tie downs etc are all black. Might pop some shiny checker plate on the front of the lid to protect it?

Having second thoughts about the tongue box I bought. It is heavy duty, and HEAVY. Between that and a deep cycle battery, I am going to add a ton to the tongue weight. Will make it a lot harder to move around. Smaller battery and a wood box might be the way to go? TBD...

Lid.

went grey first... apparently Interlux Brightsides Fire Red has ZERO hiding, must be derived from a clear base even though it is a factory mix? Covered fine over the grey, looks great!! One more coat tomorrow.

It is actually shinier than the Cherokee right now...lol. Final coat of red went on this AM.

last coat looks pretty good. Top of the lid could use some work, but it will be under the tent so I will leave it as is. Lots of MIL thickness, just a few flaws.

Fenders getting attached now, and black frame painted tonight. SO stoked.
