Whenever someone wants information on a Land Rover 4 or 5 guy come stampeding from the Toyota forums to tell them Land Rovers suck.
This is on a forum where disagreeing with someone is frowned on.
What gives?
What are the Toyota guys so worried about?

Honestly a lot of people don't even realize what forum they are looking at. I know a bunch of people who just search "new posts" rather than checking for specific forums. Also, many of the people who drive Land Cruisers are converts from the land of warm beer, so they do have valid experience and opinions to share.

Funny. I went from the LC to the LR (and then bought a Tacoma to compliment the LR). I am sure they are just trying to be helpful. Although I would like to see everyone, regardless of preference, compare and contrast rather than flat out saying any particular brand is better. This would help us all make more informed decisions in our purchasing and give more balanced commentary on the subject. Especially for newbs searching for information. My.02 - and probably not worth that!:victory:

Sorry to hear you feel that it is frowned upon to disagree with others. Feel free to express your opinions as candid as you wish, no reason to hold back

Land Rovers do suck in some categories that others place an importance on that we are willing to accept as owners. Namely reliability

Don't let what others say bother you or compel you to be defined by what they think about anything

Toyota owners might be feeling a little sensitive right now since our country decided to make villains out of the company for some political currency

I drove a Prius for the past week, loved it. Felt a bit like George Jetson but loved it, wonderful car - so quiet, comfy, and fun, One tank of gas lasts a looooong time - "smart cars" are cool

Tonight I drove an older Tundra, loved it, hit some rough roads ROUGH, thing was buttery smooth. Then I got home, and while I walked passed our Disco that has been sitting for 10 days and the battery is dead and will cost me 300$ to have towed tomorrow and possibly thousands of dollars to get fixed but I'm hoping it's under $500 - I opened the door and inhaled that Land Rover smell - love that smell. I can't wait to get it fixed so I can drive it despite the drama or the fact it is the only late model car that has so many issues lol

We live in a rough climate though so cars take a good beating

Yeah, and what about those bastard LR owners who tell them to buy Hummers?

Pfft! The Toyota problems are real. They've just been caught with their pants down for the first time. They published documents for the shareholders bragging about how much money they saved by brushing safety concerns under the rug. They need to take notes from the others. You have the Big Boy meetings in "the room where notes aren't taken".

Meh. I had an 89 VW Fox that cost $800, got the same milage as the Prius, was quiet, comfy, and definitely more fun than a Prius.

For the record, I'm not anti-Toyota. Well, OK, maybe I am. :D Beige Bites Back!

I was guilty once but honestly that's my excuse - I don't really know which forum I am in - I only looked at today's new posts. And I don't like rules...

Seriously though, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Traveling with a Land Rover makes the experience much better, it wouldn't be as much fun without...

:)

Actually, disagreeing with someone is not frowned upon at all. Educated and well thought discussions containing multiple viewpoints are more than welcom. It's when pepole become rude, mean and disrespectful that't not cool. :snorkel:

I always end up in here from the posts on the front page of the site.

As far as the Toyota/LR thing, at least on the threads I have seen I always thought it was kind of a running joke. I've never seen it get particularly negative or serious.

There have been several cases where someone comes in and says "I'm new to this... Toyota or LR?" If they don't really have a preference and are new enough to not understand the vehicles on their merits such that a question like that seems useful, the answer they need is the one that gets them out and enjoying travelling with the least fuss and frustration, even if not the most engaging or romantic approach.

On the other hand I assumed at least some of it was coming from the LR crowd in the same vein that some native Austin residents advocate their city -- "It's horrible. Don't ever move here. In fact, tell me where you live so I can move there!" -- in other words, "if you don't know what you're looking for, go harass somebody else". Perhaps that's just the conspiracy theorist in me peeking out, though.

I second that opinion. The LR/Toyota thing seems to me much like team rivalry and I view the posts for either make much like I do the banter over our favorite sports teams. I don't think you can be a Land Rover owner without some sense of humor about the quirks of the vehicle.

Of those quirks, reliability has never been a problem for me. My Defender has never left me stranded, I may be a rare exception, though.

I guess I would be one of "these people" the OP refers to, but I'll say right now: I REALLY LIKE ROVERS!!!!!

I look at all the forums becasue there are cool builds of all sorts of vehicles. However I guess sometimes I just feel the answer to a "This versus that" rig question, as seem to get posted quite frequently in the RR forum, the answer is neither but in fact another Brand/Model. That other is Toyota for me and it's just my opinion. I just feel that whatever your price range, if you're looking for a vehicle like a Disco or an H3 , or anything of that size, that NOT considering a Toyota of similar cost/size is a bad choice. It's just my opinion and I'm just throwing it out there. I'm clearly an opininated guy so...sorry about that, we've all got our foibles eh ;)

I apologize if I've hurt anyone with my voiced opinions on Rovers, and again state that I in fact have quite a worsening case of "Rover Fever" so consider that with all my statements if you would. I'm completely IN LOVE with the 1st gen. Range Rover as well as the Late SII 109. KellyMoe and the "Expo Rover on Portals" guy's 130 are trucks I'd be more then proud to drive and in fact make me constantly think of more things to do to my own rig.

Cheers and no worries

Dave

Oh man I had an 89 Wolfsburg Fox -Charcoal greay ext. on light greay/charcoal/black Wolfsburg interior and Gti Recaro's- that I turned into a Rallye MACHINE when I lived/worked up on Mt. Hood. It was SO much fun and still go near 35mpg on the Highway. Come to think of it aside from the odd-ball lift-out sunroof that would intermitantly leak, it was one of my favorite cars I;ve ever owned... I really wish I'd thrown the top-end off of my MKII Jetta and a syncro driveline (don't know if you remember this but they have a rear drive line tunnel in the body pressing...) in it. I guess I also wish some wanker hadn't run a stop sign and writen it off with me in it... I loved that car. I've taken it places that some people with 4wds were hesitant to go. I'd put four wheel cable chains on her and jsut CHARGE up the mountain with NO issues it was unreal. by the time I totaled her I had compeltely sandblasted the lower valances with all the gravel road driving I had doen that had gotten around the front guards... Man I wish I still had that car...

AS HUGE a Toyota fan as I am, I completely agree with you about the Prius and it's issues and problems... Me personaly, I think Bio-Haul/Diesel is the answer to the fuel crisis... but that's a whole nuther' thread eh ;)

Cheers

Dave

Ha!
Big news last year when the Prius broke the 50mpg mark.
30 years before that I'd borrow my dad's, '77 diesel Rabbit to drive to Vermont from Virginia and average 65mpg (they were rated at 52mpg). And it was fun to drive as well.
