I hate smug.. it has the most counter intuitive interface I've seen of all the popular online photo hosting sites. Really distracts from the photo viewing experience.
Smugmug isn't perfect but IMO it's loads better than most other hosting sites when you consider the price, and that it's so very easy customize. You can make it as messy or as clean as you'd like. I prefer to keep the layout of my pages simple and clean.

What do you use ywen?

I don't know what you mean. The interface is pretty simple. Are-you sure you are not confusing it with another service?
I have a flickr account.. but haven't really been using it in over a year...
The major thing is the thumbnails.. can you even have an entire photos category show up in a grid of thumbnails? The only implementations I've seen are like a few thumbnails per page and 20 pages of thumbnails.. I just want to get a quick overview of the entire gallery.
Besides, flicker has a reputation for having work pilfered off of it, so I don't trust it.
You can but it's not the most attractive way to display ones photos. Of course the owner can also enable, if they choose, a setting to allow the viewer choose the page layout.
Edit: Here I enabled viewer control on one of my galleries so you can see what it's like.
