Great shot! How close did you get before he noticed you? :coffeedrink:

1st 3 shots are outstanding Beau!!

Isnt that a sweet lens. I got to play with one once and it was a bad thing. It only took a few months of saving and selling off everything I could think of before I had one in the camera case.

Best Lens Canon Makes that I own, till I can save up for that 800mm

Thanks Pat! It was fun shooting with the 400mm, and I know I would not have gotten some of the shots with out it! The 2.8 f-stop was nice in the low light and overcast conditions we were in. I would have to sell the 4Runner to pay for one though.

We were hunting brontosaurs, and did not have a license to take a Tyrannosaur, so we very silently crept away. :sombrero:

All you have to do is explain to the wifey how much its going to help with her photos in low light and overcast conditions, and she'll figure out a way to get it.

Trick is, dont explain how much it weighs. Cindy decided she doesn't like using it all that much because of its weight, so it's now mine...LOL

That's a sweet shot.

Now my goal is to get a similar shot with my wife who is not even into photography.

That 400 f2.8 is a big, heavy lens.

The 200 f2.0 L IS with a 2xTC III will weigh about 1/2 what the 400 f2.8 L IS weighs, and cost only cost about 80% as much. Hey, that's quite a bit cheaper.:bike_rider:

Maybe the images might not be quite as good, but they will still be pretty darn good, I suspect.

400 f2.8 IS L 11.8 pounds for $7999.00

200 f2.0 IS L 5.6 pounds for $5799.00

2xTC III 11.46 ounces for $499.00

I am sure B&H will take orders.:coffeedrink:

Do a price comparison of a 400 f/2.8 with a 2x converter or just the 800mm f/5.6! Cindy wanted the 400 f/2.8 for when we spent 5 months living in Yellowstone. We needed the low light capabilities for shooting before and after sunrise, which was when we shot 90% of our wildlife photos

Pat, don't you also have the 500mm f/4? If so, which do you find yourself using more often?

Had use of one the entire time while we were in Yellowstone as my neighbor had it and we worked opposite shifts. Cindy found she liked the 500mm much better because of its lighter weight and she felt it was balanced better on the Wimberley. Personally I like the 400 f/2.8 because I can slap on a 1.4x or a 2x and still be at a usable f/stop for low light shooting.

Ask me in 10 years when I probably will be cursing the extra weight, but right now I can handle it. I guess it's just a reason to stay in shape.

If I was to get another lens that cost this much, I'd either get the 600mm or wait for the new 200-400 that is coming out. The new one has a built in extender. I'm actualy thinking about selling the 400 f/2.8 and buying the 200-400, but a friend of mine who owns a camera shop (Wyoming Camera Outfitters) said the new lenses will be back ordered for a minimum of a year due to the Japan Tsunami. So I have plenty of time to save up

I thought this was a funny photo and it fits the theme Wildlife

It's our 13 year old Beagle showing the much younger and more agile dog who's the boss

This monster was munchin' on parsley in our herb garden. A crazy thing, where the eyes would be, if you make it mad it shot out these tenticle horns out trying to sting whatever is touching it.
