With the H55 do you really need the Ranger OD? Perhaps going UD, but their UD ratio isn't all that great. Would be good for splitting gears, but won't really work all that well as a 'doubler'.

Or is it just to get more levers up there? If that's the case, then you also need a PTO driven winch. :sombrero:

It simplifies the V8 conversion to use the Ranger which eliminates and adapter plate between the H42 and the V8 bell housing. A better question might be "With the ranger do you need the H55?"

Another thing to consider is that the Ranger allows you to split ANY gear essentially doubling the number of gear available in high and low range.

Motor Update

After spending about an hour going over the motor, pulling the valve cover, wet testing, compression testing and etc...

Looks like i have either a burnt valve or a hole in the piston on number 3.

My mechanic thinks i just have a burnt valve.

Looks like time for a top-end rebuild job. I plan on doing the top-end rebuild in a few months when the weather gets a little warmer or a place in my shop clears out.....I plan on driving her a little....It's hard not to!!

Time to research and see what is all involved to get the job done.

I need to locate some manuals for the thing.

On another note.....Everyone here at work is jealous now.....Didn't think this would cause a stir.

Other than the head problem.....Life is good!

If you do a leakdown test, you will know for sure. Pressurize the cylinder via the spark plug hole on the compression cycle on that cylinder and if air comes out the exhaust or intake, you have a bad valve, if it blows out your dipstick tube or oil fill hole, you have a bad piston (or rings). You could also run a bore scope in there to see for yourself.

If I were you, I'd try to find a fuel injection system and head from a 3FE (which there should be quite a few out there from clunkers) and build up a 2FE.

Nice find Nic! What a steal for the miles and clean interior!

Get used to the envious looks you'll get... Lemme know when you get that thing running right and we'll do 60 owner's Father 'n Daughter run. Maybe we'll let Jonathan & Roger ride shotgun with us...

Nice ride Nic! If I ever wound up with an LC it would be a 60...love the style. Although I'd probably have to try to swap in a 4.7L Tundra V-8...as sweet running as a 327 Chevy and still a Toyota!

x2. And I happen to know a guy with a couple complete long-block 3FE's sitting on pallets ;)

Of course get your checkbook out and I could send you home with a 1HZ too

Fwiw there is an H55F on KSL right now, no affiliation.

With the number of guys doing SBC conversions 2F engines are pretty easy to find. You might shop around and find a decent one for cheap or free.
Last night at our TLCA club meeting somebody gave one to another member just to get it out of his garage. If you plan on a V8 conversion any way it might be better than throwing money at the one you have.
