I left work early yesterday, had some errands to run. For the last couple of months my tires have been a bit of a concern to me - I still had the original BFG Rugged Trail TAs that the truck came with new, in 265/70R16 size. But with the truck pushing 55k miles, and the tires showing maybe 1/4" of tread in places, I knew it was going to be time to get new tires soon. Worse yet, we're heading into the snowy winter and even though technically and legally I can run the tires until they have 1/16" of tread, I don't think I want to be doing that when there's a foot of snow on the ground.
Stopped in to Discount Tire to see what they had in stock. The thing I like about Discount tire is that they start with one price and if you say "I'll think about it" or "I think I'm going to shop around" they'll start cutting the price to get your business. At first I thought I'd have to go with some generic no-name tire, but before long the salesman made me a killer deal for 4 Yokohama Geolander AT-S's (about $560.00 OTD) in the desired 235/85x16 size.
The AT-S appears to be a bit more of a "road" oriented tire than the AT+II but that's fine - I don't do a lot of mud anyway and I do want something that's quiet on the highway and decent in rain and snow and the AT-S seems to fit that requirement.
No photos yet but I'll try to post some this weekend. Funny thing about the size - I assumed that since the 235/85s were only about 1" bigger than the previous 265/70's, or only 1/2" differnence in radius, that they'd be an easy fit. Well, they fit, but it sure looks tight! There appears to be only about 3/4" clearance between the back of the front tire and the mudflap, and that's without the suspension being compressed! I'm thinking that before I do any serious 'wheeling, I probably need to think about upgrading the suspension with a very mild lift, maybe 2" (I'm thinking the OME kit.)
I'm anxious to find out how the taller, narrower tire affects both handling, the speedo and MPG. We're getting snow right now, so I'm glad to have new tires.
