Woo Hoo! 235/85 16's are on!

I left work early yesterday, had some errands to run. For the last couple of months my tires have been a bit of a concern to me - I still had the original BFG Rugged Trail TAs that the truck came with new, in 265/70R16 size. But with the truck pushing 55k miles, and the tires showing maybe 1/4" of tread in places, I knew it was going to be time to get new tires soon. Worse yet, we're heading into the snowy winter and even though technically and legally I can run the tires until they have 1/16" of tread, I don't think I want to be doing that when there's a foot of snow on the ground.

Stopped in to Discount Tire to see what they had in stock. The thing I like about Discount tire is that they start with one price and if you say "I'll think about it" or "I think I'm going to shop around" they'll start cutting the price to get your business. At first I thought I'd have to go with some generic no-name tire, but before long the salesman made me a killer deal for 4 Yokohama Geolander AT-S's (about $560.00 OTD) in the desired 235/85x16 size.

The AT-S appears to be a bit more of a "road" oriented tire than the AT+II but that's fine - I don't do a lot of mud anyway and I do want something that's quiet on the highway and decent in rain and snow and the AT-S seems to fit that requirement.

No photos yet but I'll try to post some this weekend. Funny thing about the size - I assumed that since the 235/85s were only about 1" bigger than the previous 265/70's, or only 1/2" differnence in radius, that they'd be an easy fit. Well, they fit, but it sure looks tight! There appears to be only about 3/4" clearance between the back of the front tire and the mudflap, and that's without the suspension being compressed! I'm thinking that before I do any serious 'wheeling, I probably need to think about upgrading the suspension with a very mild lift, maybe 2" (I'm thinking the OME kit.)

I'm anxious to find out how the taller, narrower tire affects both handling, the speedo and MPG. We're getting snow right now, so I'm glad to have new tires.

Nice!

I can feel the excitement about the new rubber. Fews mods and upgrades you can do have the effect like new tires.
:jumping:

I have been stuck on my OEM type, generic but free 265/75/16's (they look way smaller than that) since March of 05'. My old tires were done and my wedding was less than month away. I was desperate and out of cash. My new ones should be in today and get them on Monday! 285/75 Nitto Terra Grapplers.

You're slightly larger than 265/75/16's right now. Some 4Runner owners say they rub with the upsided 265/75's, so you might experience some rubbing, too.

I was looking at some 245's, too, which is what I might go with on the next go-around. I'm in the snow belt, too, so I'd rather have narrower tires.

I like the Geolanders. Good tire.

PICTURES! :chowtime:

Second that, I'm running the Geolander A/T's in a 265/75 - really did their job in the snows last winter. Can't wait to see the pics. of your pizza cutters!

14K on Geolanders AT II's and no problems with the 285 except for my light ****** rear end (moves alot more in snow, esp with the factory limited slip.) I might look in to a set of 235/85's for towing! I had a set on my F-350 a couple of years ago and I liked the way they road. I have the factory 245/75's mounted on stock and i've use them for long haul towing, but I would like the height of the 285's! Gives the HD a full wheel well!

you sure bout that? i run 265/75 now and will be changing soon. when i was looking around it seemed like the 235/85 was just a hair less tall than the 265/75, close but not quite, i really would love to find 245/85,,, but am going to settle on the 255/85. i have 8" rims and that helps make the decision also. these metric sizes get confusing sometimes, but there sure are a lot of sizes to choose from.

Good decision going with the 255/85R16. As unpopular a size as 255/85 is (national sales numbers) this site must have a small affect on some of these tires in this size staying in circulation. Do you know which 255/85 you are going to buy?

265/75R16 and 235/85R16 are very similar in diameter, depending on the specific tire, with the possible edge going to the 235/85 often being closer to 32-in. than the 265/75, which are often about 31.6 tall. But it really depends on which apples and oranges we are comparing. You can find tall 265/75s that are about 32-in and some 235s that are on the short side. Loaded radius is what really maters, how tall the bottom half of the tire is when mounted on your rig.

My dad has that size on his Rover:

Sorry it's not a better photo to show the width. They're skinny little suckers, kinda like the last kid to get picked in PE. Nevertheless, 235/85 is very expeditiony.

redline,,, i would be happy to stick with the BFG MT but this set i have now is just very disapointing on the road,,, what happened to MT's??? my old non KO set of 33/9.50 were round quiet and smooth on the street, these things are choppy loud and vibrate. i would like to try the cooper STT or maxxis bighorn next. we'll just have to see what kind of price i can find when i'm ready.

p.s. i wish the parnelli jones dirt grip tire was available in a size i wanted, i have the 37/12.50 on my landcruiser and i am so happy with them.

p.s.s,, hey articulate, thats a very expeditiony pic of your pops,,, loaded rig with the yellow grass and mountains behind.
