Wrangler "completely new in 2017"

When MB owned their share they did a market analysis of a diesel option at $1700 and didn't find it market viable...

I don't know if I'd pony up 3.5K. I want the torque, want to be able to tow better, want the range. But I want what I want ---- if I'm gunna pay that nut to Mutha Fiat, I also want my bare bones interior, manual trans, etc. I really live out of my vehicles for weeks at a time. It would be nice to have something that works right out of the box.

Off the top of my head:
bedlined interior
conduit or some sort of raceway for the wiring
huge or dual battery
rear seat delete with storage option --- dog option. a brand that purports to be outdoorsy should put-up or shut-up
cb option. c'mon alreay. it was discussed in 1978 and we still install them. put it somewhere logical and out of the way
driving light kits with easy switches to install

It would piss off the aftermarket but, so many things could be incorporated that most Jeepers want and stupid she-eye-tea could be eliminated...

I can see the bedlined interior, and perhaps a raceway for the wiring. But the rest... that's for the aftermarket.

Always cracks me up that everyone always wants diesel... Is it because we can't get it or what? Sure mileage is better but I'm sure the price jump will be enough that most won't opt for the $3500 plus sticker price bump.
Well (at least with the GCs) it's not like the Hemi doesn't have it's own price bump.

GC folks looking for more than the Pentastar have these two options:

Hemi - $2,844 invoice - 14/21 MPG
Diesel - $4,005 invoice - 20/28 MPG

Fueleconomy.gov has the annual fuel cost of the diesel being $1,000 less than the Hemi.

To me, it doesn't make sense to jump from a Pentastar to a Diesel just for the mileage. But if you want to jump from a Pentastar to something more powerful, to me the diesel is more attractive than a Hemi.

Gen 2 Pentastar engines should get a bump in power and efficiency. Combine that with an 8 speed auto and less weight... Really doesn't make sense for Fiat to add a diesel to the wrangler line up.

Its known that the 2.8 VM 4-banger diesel we get in the JK here in Europe is the same compered to the 2.8 Duramax Chevrolet will introduce to the US market in 2016 with the new Colorado... Why not use that?

Other companies offer things as dealer-installed options that get warranty protection. Why not Jeep?

It makes perfect sense especially with the ever increasing burden the government is putting on overall fuel economy for manufacturers.....a diesel would help

read my post 65, I think they will use the 2.8 we already have in Europe for about 7 years in the JK now.... proven concept but emissions did not match US regulations which, due to Chevrolet using it in the US as a 2.8 Duramax now available only in Thailand, is going to change...

Nobody knows which diesel they'll use, if they go for a diesel in North America at all.

Based on previous comments from the CEO, and the sales numbers for the diesel GC and RAM 1500, I'll be shocked if they don't offer a diesel Wrangler.
I hope it comes soon in the JK, before this "all-new" Wrangler in 2017.

We know the 3.0 is now emissions certified, etc.
And as emkay points out, the 2.8 will be very shortly as well, so it looks like Jeep could use either.

While the 3.0 could be justified in the bigger/heavier Wrangler Unlimited, I personally think it's overkill for the 2 door.
With CAFE standards, the mention of lighter and the obvious focus on economy, I expect they'll want a ligher/smaller engine.

My money says they'll go for the 2.8, or some other lighter, more efficient diesel than the 3.0 in the GC.

Pure speculation, of course.

From what I have seen from Chrysler diesel engines are used in North America when sales start to slow. If you look at the Ram 1500 sales slow a bit, offer the diesel, and then people who were holding out for a diesel buy, and people who had a gas Ram 1500 and would benefit from a diesel will buy as well. Same thing with the Grand Cherokee.

We have been hearing rumor and speculation on the JK since 2006, but the reality is that sales never slowed to where they needed to add another engine to boost sales again. If I had to guess the same will hold true on the redesign.
