@UjointoffroadCO strikes again! After completing the front clip upgrade, I reached out to Justin at U-joint CO and bought a front bumper. It has been sitting in my driveway for a couple of weeks covered in snow. The day before Thanksgiving I decided to begin the install. I purchased the Badlands 12k synthetic rope winch and some LED flood and spot lights from Harbor Freight. Given the weight of my rig, I will need to use the recovery pulleys if I get seriously stuck (pulleys are on board). You get 8 grade 8 bolts with the U-Joint kit and use them all. I know the front bumper was only attached by two on each side, but it was never meant to hold a winch or be used to anchor point to do recovery work. The installation is straightforward:
- remove old bumper ( 4 bolts and a one person job)
- add electrical connections to winch
- bolt winch into new bumper & add any additional lighting
- position new bumper into place get a couple of bolts on loosely. The assembly was ~130 lbs, so I enlisted the help of my wife. We each grabbed an end, held it against the mount and loosely placed two bolts and nuts.
- built two wiring harnesses to connect the new flood and spot lights to the S-pod and connected them
- ran electric cables for the winch to a cut-off switch and battery
- tested all electrics
- bolted up the bumper
The only modification I made to the bumper was to the top plate covering the winch. It came with nut and bolts and I swapped in some nutserts to make installation and removal of that much easier. I would be remiss if I did not comment on the quality of this bumper. It is more than a bumper...it's aluminum art : ). It is so on-brand for U-Joint, both functional and great looking.
