Expeditions 7: Two Years Around the World on all Seven Continents.

Logistics for Antarctica are on full spin-cycle, and we are finalizing equipment lists and starting to test the equipment in the field before departure. Unfortunately, the details of conducting the trip often make it difficult to update the thread in real time, but I have copious notes, so look...

Lack of 70 series Land Cruisers.

Funny. I looked back at that original post from 2011. Two completely different shipments and completely different vehicles. The 70 series we wanted to ship over was owned originally by Kaymar and then by Patrice from Outback Imports, who was going to send it over to the US for promotion at...

Lack of 70 series Land Cruisers.

Sitting in Belgium at the moment. Documentation problems with the Defender (i.e., given recent crushings, I am taking no chances with documentation). I really need to get that 70 series back from Europe - it has been in storage way too long

Sirocco Overland 2013 Expedition: UK - Vladivostok (Siberia) Adventure

Congrats! That is a good feeling, isn't it Were you able to take the old summer road that goes west of the M56 and ends in Palatka? That was a beautiful drive.

    Lense Recommendation

I will also say that wides do have their place, and I have a 16-35mm F2.8 bolted to the front of a MKIII. The wide is critical in tight spaces, like the cab of trucks, inside that ice cave or a beautiful church. Inside a tent, etc. 17mm - Siberia

    Lense Recommendation

I suppose the gist of my recommendation is that you are way better off having one great lens than three or four marginal ones. Something fast and sharp, and with good construction, dust and water resistance, etc. Think used 24-105mm L (about $800 used), or the 24-70mm 2.8L if you can stomach the...

    Lense Recommendation

Landscapes are an interesting challenge, and not always solved with a wide angle. In fact, I have moved away from wide angle for landscape and am working with longer focal lengths to compress the interesting subjects. This was shot at 70mm- Namib Desert 28mm- Afghanistan / Tajikistan...

Lack of 70 series Land Cruisers.

Yeah, 200Tdi Discos started in 1989. I am going to find one and bring it in - for sure.

Lack of 70 series Land Cruisers.

Yeah, I get all my parts from Stedman or Kurt (cruiseroutfitters)

    Lense Recommendation

Take a look at the 17-55mm 2.8 with IS. It will be the only lens you will need on that camera for quite some time. Then buy a 70-200mm in whatever variant fits your budget. All are super sharp, both the F4 and the F2.8

We are really looking forward to seeing the new Fuso based Sportsmobile. An exciting new development for sure.

Lack of 70 series Land Cruisers.

IMHO, the 70 will have a nice little boom here in the US, particularly once the HZJ77 is available, which is a seriously fantastic wagon. This is only in a few years, and the JDM and EU trucks will start pooring in. I believe this is even more relevant as most of the new trucks we can buy suck...

    Pole of Cold expedition

I suppose what is important to note is that the Pole of Cold and Tomtor are on the old summer road. There is a new road that goes north and around to Magadan. That can be driven by a 2wd in ideal (i.e. dry) conditions. The old roads built by the Gulags are the interesting ones.

    Pole of Cold expedition

The bridge is only decorative now. The first crossing was the most difficult, and the deepest. Even the locals treat is with some respect and often wait for larger trucks to pull them across. It was about hood deep on the Land Cruisers and late in the year. There are multiple water crossings...
