I spent some time with the Front Runner LR3 on my last trip to Utah. A nice, clean project, with particular emphasis on storage.
There were enough new products on the vehicle that it warranted a home page article: Front Runner 2006 LR3 Project
For six people, I think the Suburban or Excursion will be the only choice. For a trip into town, a 100 or Sequoia would be ok, but on a road trip, you will all need the space.
Both are great trucks and available in your price range. The Excursion can be made quite capable.
The SMB would be a good choice, and can fit in a high-cube container.
We travelled through big chunks of mainland Mexico in one, living out of the vehicle for about six weeks overall. They are a great compromise between performance/comfort/size.
Air Lockers are not available for the G-Class. It has been done a few times with Toyotas and Jeeps, but mostly when a hardware upgrade is associated (like a larger axle, etc).
I love the idea of a Samurai. I drove most of Central Asia and the Silk Road in a Suzuki Jimny. There were two of us in the truck and it was below GVWR and I could still see out of the back window. Light and not-so-fast ;)

I doubt someone with an HD package LR3/4 would swap the diff out for an Air Locker. You are most certainly correct, I bet the system would be unhappy if it is expecting a factory locker and it is not seeing one or getting the input expected.
I do not think the computer will be affected at all. We have installed lockers on other vehicles with traction control, and it never seems to care, particularly since the air lockers are mechanical and do not interface with the factory systems. The vehicle would just see that all is well in...
We drove on the frozen Peel River. It was pretty difficult progress in places (they only plowed once in the season, so drifts built up and the ice had buckled), but an amazing experience.

A hint for our most recent modification - we are pretty excited to say the least

It all depends on the driver and conditions. In a rock crawling situation, I believe A-Trac would cause differential and axle damage before a locker would, particularly if the vehicle is being driven appropriately. A-Trac requires wheel spin to activate. A wheel that is spinning, then suddenly...
We wanted to do more dirt and received a few great suggestions from the locals. I have never completed a trip on the exact route as intended. Local knowledge always has an influence, sometimes helping you avoid trouble, other times suggesting a wonderful alternative.
I remember our trip to...
DRW = you have too much stuff ;)
People ride around the world with their entire possessions contained on a motorcycle.
A DRW is just too much of a performance compromise IMHO, particularly in sand and mud. If the goal is never to venture far from pavement, then the DRW is fine. If you are...
We only had six weeks in the country and the primary travel goal was the Canning Stock Route. We did use the Great Central Road, Plenty and others to avoid pavement. In addition, we had already explored big chunks of the Simpson and Flinders area on a previous trip.
We installed a "hidden" stereo, mounting a Pyle weather resistant four-channel amplifier behind the factory radio block out. There is a discrete mini plug input and a small volume dial.
