The old summer road to the Pole of Cold requires 4wd. That is the last 170 miles or so. The first water crossing kills several locals per year. A family died just a few weeks before we crossed.

I would not consider anything less than a Cross-Fire 2 level of protection for the dirt. I learned the hard way that some of these hybrid boots are just not suitable for the dirt for real protection. I banged up my foot pretty good (metatarsal) on a low-speed crash in a set of Sidi Adventures...

This is a great trip. One of the participants (lead driver and mechanic) Gisli is a personal friend from Iceland. We were able to provide some logistics support from our recent trip to the Pole of Cold last fall.

The Land Cruiser is still running perfect and is a pleasure to travel in. We just watch the temps and she continues to soldier on. We have done nearly 30,000 kms with her since purchased. Not a single failure. . .

Great route. Similar to the one we completed, although ours included the more rugged and remote Wakhan Corridor in Tajikistan. I am happy to help with the route, even send our GPX file.
The only modification I would recommend would be Iran. If I were to do the route again, I would include Iran.
