research single phase motor load inrush current and LRA (lock rotor amps). keep in mind, when plugged into utility power, your ability to deal with LRA is in effect, infinite. you cant outdraw the utility. your genset on the other hand has its limitations.

not true. for most people its a fiscal decision. you can put 5000 down on a new one and build out piecemeal over a couple years without losing 40,000 in liquidity up front. with modified vehicles, especially in this segment, a few years after you build it, you end up with an 8 year old product...
