Note that you're holding an election ;) but I cast a vote for keeping the awning. I don't have one over the rear door of the Sprinter and I'm thinking I'll need to add one, as the afternoon sun comes in pretty strong with the rear open. You've got a smaller area, so maybe sun protection is less...
I dunno, Lance . . . four times in ten years isn't too bad. It's just that this truck is so iconic that whenever it gets sold, it generates a huge, hard-to-ignore, sales thread. ;)
For anyone interested in buying a truck suitable for ANY overlanding task you have in mind, just do it. Scott...
Creative Mobile Interiors in Grove City (Columbus suburb), Ohio. If my memory serves, CMI was part of the team that did the design work on the prototype Airstream Sprinters, and they also have experience at doing self-sufficient Sprinter conversions. There website is at...
Sort of. One of the expert Sprinter contributors named it the "sneaky braking" system. In common with lots of current vehicles, the Sprinter's "ASR" (automatic slip reduction) uses measurements, mostly of wheel spin, to brake individual wheels. Not exactly triple lockers, or even a limited slip...
I'm reluctant to even post this information, but consider it my duty to the optimistic amongst you . . .
There is recent information that Daimler-Benz will make an all-wheel driven Sprinter available in the U.S. and Canada in a little over a year. What I know about it is from this thread on the...
I can only wish that my vent fan was one of the significant aero problems with my rig, but with that whole barn-door-front/giant cabin thing going on, I doubt it matters. ;)
Anyone thinking there'd be a problem having my sidewall vent open while driving is probably right. I've never done it...
If the rain comes straight down, no worries. The hinge across the top is continuous, so water running down the side of the truck diverts and then keeps going straight down. If you put the vent into the side of something less straight--a truck canopy, for example--maybe it wouldn't work so well...
Thanks for the compliment. I appreciate that people enjoy seeing the XV-JP and hope it will give them good ideas (like a Fantastic vent fan in the wall ;) ).
Fantastic vent fans are good things. However, if you mount it in the side, recognize that the spinning blades will be exposed when the cover is opened. Otherwise, no downside, and less likely to make your roof leak.
Fantastic floorplan, tidy length, plenty of fenestration for those gloomy Oregon winter days . . . Geez, is my wife ever glad that this is on the other side of the country. :sombrero:
Someone here should buy this incredibly _______ piece of '70s American design. We'll all be supportive, I promise.
Not sure I agree with this, though I perhaps didn't understand the comment. My understanding is a) that the number of cycles available when discharging an AGM battery to 80% is the same as when discharging a flooded cell battery to 50%, and b) the self-discharge rate for an AGM batteries is 1-3%...
You may not want to pay for them, but two Exped Megamats would be a fine solution. I agree that a cut-to-shape foam mattress could be slightly better, but if you ever wanted to use the back of the truck, it'd be much more difficult to pull out the mattress and store it than to deflate a couple...
Incidentally . . . the issue of keeping the truck usable as a 1- to 5-person daily driver while making it quickly workable as an overland truck was exactly what I faced with my last Hundred. There may be some ideas you can use in this thread:
