    New Defender Rage/Hate Thread

Well said. 1. The bilateral move upmarket has left a gap at the utility end. There is no longer a product that fills the slot that other manufacturers still serve. That product was the Defender. The new product fills the Discovery's former slot, doesn't fill the old Defender's slot, and...

Yes, let's not discuss the elephant in the room. Good luck with tires and the thousand threads that will follow.

That's some supercar ****************. Why is it that nearly any other utility 4x4 can use any number of off the shelf tire sizes, but LR always makes it a pain the ass to fit truly off-road worthy tires of one's choice? You really think that trucks, with payload ratings multiples of any LR, are...

So nearly all the vehicles in the same market niche as the Defender are still using solid front axles.. <--- Disclaimer: This is not arguing "that unless you have a race car or a super fast car, solid axles is better than IS"

Wrong. Educate yourself. They're "not road legal" due to not being sold by the manufacturer in the US. If a vehicle has to be imported, it must be 25 years old. It has nothing to do with safety. You can import nearly any vehicle you want if it's 25 years old. Quote me, liar. I have only said...

It is better, for most applications, because most applications are not utility/offroad. I've said this countless times in as many ways as possible for you. However, they solid axles exist in utility/offroad vehicles and will continue to. No obstacle course needed. Again, they continue to roam...

I can quote if necessary, but I never said we could "overcome the problems of having the wheels connected without disconnecting". I essentially said that characteristic of solid axles is irremovable; you have to live with it. Further, I said material science and engineering can address the...

Sounded like you were then asking for cheap cars. I'm glad you were able to find it. Here a "car" is either any passenger vehicle, or a sedan type car, not including SUVs. It's vague term that varies by context, person, and apparently region. Anyways, enough splitting hairs. Engineers select...

Take it or leave it. Trucks are as common as cars (whatever you think that means) here, and dominate the sales charts. Like I said, the LR3/4 is heavier than many of them. The Defender was a truck as well, so no, I wont revise the list. I already re-quoted this list several times.

They only moved away where their advantages are associated with lesser priorities, which is fine, but that's not every market niche. Obviously they still exist and will continue to.

The priorities direct one to select a solid axle. The priority in itself is not a solid axle. Just as the vehicles that currently ship with solid front axles are directed by their design priorities.

I edit my post in two conditions, a typo, or incomplete thought. I try to do it quickly as to avoid misleading. Correct, I don't decide what the priorities are. They were decided long ago, and continuously revised, but never detoured completely. To find a different solution to the same...

Man, I went back just to see if I missed your "car" specification. Didn't see it. At least I checked. Maybe you did specify that. Hard to tell now. Never knew you were asking for a list of cheap overland cars. Is the Wrangler a car? It's a body-on frame solid axle vehicle, like many trucks. It's...

I see your comparison, and it gave me a good laugh, but it's not positioned quite right. The iPhone is somewhat of a luxury/consumer good. A better comparison would be "Hey guys, I'm REALLY upset the Dell Precision 7920 no longer has a headphone port. I WANT TO LIVE IN THE NOW." The Precision...

I want to live in the now, where solid axles are used when appropriate. I'm of the opinion that IS/Air is the realm of luxury cars. IS alone is appropriate for a wider, share of the market, but not all. I apologize if my position was unclear.

How do you think the P38 and D2 handled? However you describe it, it was more than adequate for a Defender, which would only be improved with further development. IMHO they handle better than some modern IS SUVs.
