    suitability of M16 for Afghanistan

If I was given permission to buy any weapon on the market and take it to war, I wouldn't choose the M16. I'd personally choose the AC-130, a B2, or a Trident Submarine with missiles, but thats me. For something that can be carried more or less reasonably by an individual? I'd probably prefer...

    suitability of M16 for Afghanistan

The M16 will place more rounds (that are less effective stoppers) more effectively - until it jams. AK's with decent ammo just keep shooting. I also find it telling that in all the testing the military has done on replacement weapons, they haven't tested an AK pattern at all: They have all...

    Gun and Caliber Flame Wars

Forgot one tidbit about FAL's: Every country that went to war with them (and won) dumped them IMMEDIATELY afterwards.

    suitability of M16 for Afghanistan

While engagements in Iraq have been at short range, in A-stan have been quite a bit longer - out to 800-900 meters. Since the ROE have been tightened up to prevent civilian casualties, having a round with longer range is a good idea. However, Martin's points are well taken. There is a...

Anyone have experience with Hydrogen generators?

For gas engines too - the big radial engines used in bombers and airliners post WWII used water injection to reduce predetonation and allow much higher compression ratios. Of course, the engines were massively large, and had poor fuel consumption (of 115/145 octane avgas, which isn't available...

    Expedition Setup Reccomendation

Think of radio waves as light....if light doesn't go through a mountain, the radio waves won't either. It can be a real problem. Now, to a very limited extent you can transmit around obstacles, but to count on it? Very iffy. And anyone operating a ham radio needs to either be a licensed ham...

    Expedition Setup Reccomendation

5-10km in hilly terrain? It all depends on the terrain between the radios. If you're in hilly terrain, all in the same straight valley or canyon, or on top of the hills, no problem! 2-meter would be just fine, and any such radios would work. Even CB might work at those short ranges, FRS not...

    suitability of M16 for Afghanistan

Hollowpoints are legal if the hollow point is there to add accuracy to the projectile. If it's there to increase the expansion of the bullet (to cause additional injury) it's not legal. Guess what?

Morse code speed - learned something new about my Dad

I had a friend (long since passed away) who was a merchant marine ships radiotelegrapher, back in the old days... He could send code by hand at about 50wpm, even years after he retired... and he did it with a straight key, not keyer. He would listen to code over the radio, and after about 6-7...

    Volunteer SAR "Perks"

Thats pretty cool! In California, we didn't get anything except more callouts. I even got a relatively minor traffic ticket (which I deserved) while on a search from some cop in Arizona.....

    Alcohol stoves?

methyl hydrate = methanol The alcohol stoves I used on boats burned methanol, which smelled rather bad. It was odorized for safety (much like natural gas). Pure methanol is both more expensive and odorless when burned. A lot fewer BTU's (like 60% or so) than other fuels.

    Alcohol stoves?

I've used pressurized alcohol stoves on boats..... They smell bad, they produce little heat, and the alcohol is rather hard to find. Also, since the alcohol has fewer BTUs per volume you need to carry more alcohol than say, gas. I know people who have used the non-pressurized alcohol...

    Ham radio instructions...

You might want to get a nifty manual for your radio...it condenses the instructions into a smaller, sometimes more understandable set http://www.niftyaccessories.com/Yaesu_cards.htm and scroll down to the 8800. You learn peoples callsigns, like you learn their names...I don't really bother...

    Ham radio instructions...

OK, so you have the radio installed, with good power and an appropriate antenna... You're in So. Nevada, so try hitting a repeater. If near LAS, the Angels Peak repeater, 145.37 (-), 123 should work. That means you need to enter the VFO mode, program in 145.37, -600KHz offset and CTCSS tone...

    Lug Nut Torque Indictors?

Thats them, thanks! It appears they slide on over the lug nuts, and move with them. Very cool. I'll have to order some. The temperature indicating ones look good for the trailer.

    Lug Nut Torque Indictors?

You can, but have the same issue as regular paint - having to clean the old paint off when you break the torque on the lug, then reapply. With these plastic dohickees, I guess you just put them in position and crank down on the lugnut, if it gets loose the flopping indicator will show.

    Lug Nut Torque Indictors?

I was passing a commercial van conversion (being used as a fleet network installation truck) today, and noticed something I've never seen before. It had plastic arrow-looking spacer devices under the lug nuts, which I presume are put in place as the nuts are torqued down, with all the pointer...
