    Water cooler/storage

I just received a 12 gallon tank from Valterra. I like that they're abs so you can solvent weld fittings anywhere you need, and they come in a range of volumes. I'll have a pump and faucet for mine to start, and will eventually add a hot water system. The black rectangle isn't sexy, but at 8"...

    Water, water, everywhere...

Brian, I just received my valterra 12 gallon tank for my van rebuild. (Family of three) I based that as a compromise for weight vs wanting to have a reserve, and our typical usage when I was carrying 7 gallon Reliant containers. Usually 1 got us through a normal weekend, and I always carried...

    Astra Camper - Good Idea?

You're not wrong. Some days, I wished I had. There are plenty of reasons to choose the Astro though, so it depends on what your goals are. AWD Astro/Safaris are easy to lift and easy to convert to true "light duty" 2-spd 4WD. 1500 Express could be had in AWD, but they're more rare, and...

    Astra Camper - Good Idea?

Not to be too much of a downer, but from another Astro owner who's doing a build, I feel compelled to offer a counterpoint or two: You will most likely NOT see 20mpg in an Astro. Sorry. I chose my Astro with the same hope, but that poor little V6 is just working too hard to return great...

    Edgestar vs Koldfront 43qt

From the pictures, it seems the Koldfront lacks the digital temperature control of the Edgestar, using a knob instead. That'd be a major knock, in my opinion. Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk

    Question for the Astro experts

Finding a G80-equipped AWD, especially in a 3.73 ratio would be ideal, but given that the relative cost of re-gearing and/or adding a rear posi is "relatively" low, it might be better to focus on overall mileage, condition, and other amenities, if they matter. For example, I really wanted 03+...

    Very small kitchen/chuck box?

Just a thought - I know you said "commercially available", but you might be able to assemble something for yourself without too much work. I just went through the details of my updated mini-chuck box in chuck-box thread in the other section...

    Transplanting a pop top?

I transplanted a GTRV pop top from a '95 van to an '03 van. There was a stiffening "ring" to keep the sheet metal rigid. I used an air nibbler. Lots of details and pics in my build thread (see signature)

    Kitchen Kit/Chuck Box

Herbie's Kitchen Kit v2.2 So I really LOVE to cook when camping. Probably 75% of my gear load for every trip is either cooking gear or actual food. I just finished the latest revision of my kitchen kit/chuck box and I thought I'd share. I'm calling this version 2.2, the most recent changes...

    Curtains? Post your solution

I started down the path of using small curtain tracks from curtain-tracks.com I cut them to length and did a little light work with a file to fit them around pieces of the window hardware, etc., then fastened them directly to the window tops with low-profile 3M dual-lock. (I wanted to be able...

Astro gets a rear tire carrier....Finally.

If you haven't seen my swivel seat project, this might help: http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/42263-Herbie-s-Chevy-Astrolander-ZMB-Build-Thread?p=727521#post727521

Astro gets a rear tire carrier....Finally.

Last nosy question: What size bar stock did you start with? Looks like 2" x 5/8" thick? (Guessing from the pics).

    Astro AWD "Stroverlander"

Exactly. December/January is a productive time for me because it's in between Mountain season and Desert Season! Plus it's when my job slows down a bit (post CES show, etc.) I'm glad I live in a place where I can actually work outside this that time of year - the Astro doesn't fit into a garage!

Astro gets a rear tire carrier....Finally.

Thanks Mike. Since we're sharing info, I dug up my notes from when I was sketching this concept and dug up the following: The OE GM Rear Hinge Pins are 11/32" diameter x 3-1/4" long (from my notes, not sure if this includes the tapered portion that protrudes slightly from the hinge). Pin head...

Astro gets a rear tire carrier....Finally.

Too funny. I guess great (or at least mediocre, in my case) minds, DO think alike. In my quest to put things on the door, I have paper sketched almost an identical method for putting a hanger on the stock driver's-side hinge. I was thinking bent 1/8" plate, but like your milled hinge...

    Astro AWD "Stroverlander"

Stay tuned to my build thread for that one. This is my winter project, now that I've been informed I will not be needed to coach Science Olympiad this season. (Yaay!) I have purchased reproduction VW Z-bed hinges and will be gutting my van's interior, then starting with a fresh build including...

    Herbie's Chevy Astrolander/ZMB Build Thread

Thanks much. Yes, we're loving the utility. Still lots of work to do, but we've managed to get a few good trips in this year. About to undertake a teardown and re-do of the bed/storage system - not happy with a few things. Tom, not yet, but I need to. The ExPo Desert Rendezvous trip had a...

    Tiger (GT and XL) Hunting

Once again, not a Tiger, but a GTRV which I think fits in here. This is a good price, I think, given that the pop-top conversion alone would cost more than that these days, so you basically get the camper-interior conversion and van for free. Usual disclaimers apply: No affiliation, just found...
