    Compomotive wheels (bowler)

Hah I have heard this story. The variation I heard involved "military contracts" and "special connections" and good old fashioned "if I told you I'd have to kill you" These are some dubious wheels indeed!

How much weight is TOO much weight?

Keep in mind added unsprung weight (heavier axles) does not really affect the load carrying capacity of the vehicle. It's sprung weight - the chassis, body, drivetrain, and everything you pack inside that is the biggest concern in our use case (Performance cars are a different story - unsprung...

Recommendations for a flexible arm tablet mount?

I have a ram X mount I use for my Galaxy tab 10.1 and it is great. I also really like the Kraken line of products thats out there- the integral case/mount is really nice. If I were to do it again I may go with the Kraken mount.

La Poile, Newfoundland : Try #1

Cool trip, have always wanted to get up there. It looks like a ground anchor would have gotten you winched through most of the bogs. How deep were they on average? Doesn't look like anything that would drown a vehicle, just kind of a hassle. Also, what are the regulations for traveling in the...

Mounting relays/fuses in a super duty

Just out of curiosity, what are you mounting that requires relays? In my 6.0, I mounted a small waterproof fuse block to the inside of the passenger side fender, directly behind the battery. Didn't have any need for relays, because everything I wired in was well under 20A I think I used this...

    12V chainsaw

I agree, that's why I carry a real saw (18" bar Husqvarna) But for someone who is chainsaw-averse, it's the next best thing.

    12V chainsaw

I just checked out the Lenox site and they make a 12" wood cutting blade. Should be enough to do an 8" or so cut

    12V chainsaw

How big do you need to cut? It would be easy to pick up a battery powered sawzall with a long wood cutting blade. Get a 12V charger for the truck and always keep a battery on it. Not that difficult, and the sawzall could be adapted to a lot of other uses in a pinch with different blades/attachments.

Government to Auction More than 4,000 HMMWV’S

Great news. To me this makes it clear that the only reason the military never auctioned HMMWVs before, was because AM General wanted to protect their retail market of $100k+ Hummers. Now that AM General doesnt really exist anymore (thanks to GM), its open season for the government to make some...

    LR3 Transmission service flush

They eventually get changed anyways when the pass-through transmission electrical connection starts leaking. To fix that, you have to drop the pan. New pan/filter, new connector pass through with o-ring, new fluid.

WTB Toyota 8" V6 rear third with 4.88 and ABS sensor

I think stock ratio was usually 4.10, not 4.88. "4.88 generally came in 92-95 trucks/4runners with V6, auto tranny, 31" tires, and tow package." From here so I guess its possible though!

CP3 - meet the heep! 5 years in the making...

Wow looks cool but is there a reason you didn't use lighter weight/thinner materials? a lot of your volume seems to be taken up by the structure itself.

    LR3 front driveshaft disaster

You are right that is not specifically an LR3 CV joint pictured but it is the same style of joint - this is a photo of an actual LR3 shaft I think your terminology is slightly off - it's the star that is attached by circlip, then the bearings, then the cage, and finally the cup/flange To...

    LR3 front driveshaft disaster

It is normal to have to "hammer" the CV joint ends out of the flanges on the diff and t-case. I have never had to use a torch though (usually resorted to a few quick raps with the air hammer instead). They pop right out. With regards to rebuilding the joint, yes it is possible assuming you...

    33" tires on stock gearing?

Yes, 3.13 gears in mine. I love the BFG's. Have driven them in every condition including rain/snow/ice with zero issues. Off road, the grip is incredible. They can be a bit noisy at times and you can feel the harmonic of the lugs hitting the road at certain speeds but there is minimal speed...

    33" tires on stock gearing?

I have 255 KM2s on my 2014 Xterra auto and it is fine. No appreciable difference in acceleration or highway power. The one thing I do find myself doing is clicking the "OD Off" button when cruising hilly 40-50mph roads just to keep the transmission from downshifting all the time. I also click...
