Same Setup, Different Vehicle, Reduced Range

It's easy to run a good ground along with the coaxial cable. See photo of how i did it (wish it were a little more detail). The ground is of utmost importance. Bob WB4ETT

    Clansman Radios

Have you guys ever seen or used British Clansman radios? These are marvelously designed and built radio systems. There are no tubes in them. It is true that a military radio is not for everyone but if you are a ham and want point to point communications, the Clansman series will work just...

My 66 Unimog 404 Cartography Truck

I understand your enthusiasm because I was also that enthused in late 1997. The radio/command 404's are great trucks. Looking at your little yellow list makes me think that the TOB might be the only problem with the clutch system. It says "No Clutch/ TOB". I interpret that to mean "no...

    Gravel road riding advice needed

Moderate your speed, run lower pressure than highway pressure if you will be on gravel long enough to be worth the air-up effort, and use 4wd at will. 4wd will help steering control, reduce rear spinout and oversteer, and help smooth corrugations. But most importantly, understand CORRUGATIONS...

Quick Weekend In Moab To Test out the 80

So, you took a picture of a pizza box but not of your vehicle on Hell's Gate? :-)

    Mazda MPV

My wife owned a Mazda MPV 4wd for many years. It was one of the first MPV's, and a good vehicle, highly underrated, actually. It was supposedly built on a B3000 pickup chassis and had rear wheel drive with switchable 4wd. 4WD worked well, and it was great in snow. We bought it with about...

    Anderson connectors for camper electrical?

I've got a dozen or so in various places in my Alaskan Camper. Plus a distribution strip in the cab, and one in the camper. I like the Powerpoles. No electrical connector should have to take mechanical strain. The installation design is poor if there's strain on the connectors, IMHO. Bob

Looking for something different for your Hilux or Ranger? How about Biwakbox?

Looks like that was designed after seeing a big a$$ed bug!! I like it. That idea would work great for a 406 Unimog. Bob

    what trailer is this?

Your trailer resembles some commercial lighting trailers. They are equipped with a small generator and a mast for lighting, for construction sites and such. Here's a picture of one I'm rebuilding to be a ham tower trailer, not the same as yours, but the heavy, low profile is similar. I agree...

Multiple battery performance with solar question

There's another consideration. No two batteries are exactly the same. When connected in parallel, the one with lower internal resistance will discharge the other one. So, even with no use they will deteriorate faster than if not connected together. My opinion, and personal usage, is to use...

    Communication options

I'm one of those ham radio zealots, too. But I'm also an offroad zealot, camping zealot, and old truck zealot, and none of those "zealotries" have ever been thrown at me like a curse word. My Karma might be damaged. I shall therefore refrain from expounding on the benefits of HF Ham Radio for...

    Some White Rim Trail pics

That spot is tight but should be fine with a 350 if you hug the edge. Here's an approach shot of the same place from a different perspective, and it is not so bad (but I did scrape a mirror on the U-1300 because I didn't think to fold it in). There were no height issues anywhere.

cb antenna mount location help needed

BigJim gives good advise. Dual antennas 'look' good but making them work requires an impedance matching harness (to get back to 50 Ohm feed again after paralleling two 50 Ohm antennas) and the combined pattern is probably in the wrong direction anyway. Top center is the best place. Larsen...

How to make a cheap isolated dual-battery setup for $50

There's a "oops" scenario here. Say you shut off the truck and leave your lights on. Come back later and red battery is dead, but with enough juice to engage the solenoid when the key is turned on. Even though the red battery is still dead and incapable of starting the truck, the yellow...

    CB tuning

Oh, I was just poking fun at the tendency of non-hams (and regrettably, some hams) to refer to an SWR METER as an SWR (standing wave ratio). In other words, you can't buy an SWR, but you can buy an SWR meter. Same thing with using the term HAM referring to ham radio equipment, as in "I...

    IRLP node owners?

Congrats on a job well done, John! I was happy to find an IRLP node in Fairbanks when my wife and I drove up there a couple of years ago. I was able to dial up Denver and talk to my daughter on a local repeater (she's a ham). That was my best IRLP experience to date!! Generous hams like you...
