    rechargeable light recommendation sought

For those that are tired of the [IMO unrealistic]cool blue light that comes from almost all available LED lanterns, flashlights, and headlamps, Pelican makes a "Color Correct" series of flashlights and headlamps that produce a light color similar to an incandescent light bulb...

    Base map for. Road trips

Gaia's *Gaia Topo* is an efficient vector map, and therefore can cover huge areas of the country for just a few gigs of storage. Conveniently stored on your phone or tablet---preferably both. It seems to be pretty good as far as I've used it, certainly for the paved roads. I did travel on a...

Exploring Southern Utah Episode 2, The Flint Trail

Very nice to have this documentation. Looking forward to seeing some more "real time" trails.

    SPF/UVF clothing

Speaking of degradation, how about when the manufacturers do it to their own products? I recently ordered a Hanes Beefy-T t-shirt; The fabric seemed thinner than an identical shirt I had ordered a couple of years ago. We weighed the 2 shirts. Hanes had found a way to subtract 6 grams from the...

    SPF/UVF clothing

UV protection comes from the tightness of the weave. There is no physical way a coating on the outside of woven cloth could stop light from passing through the voids in the fabric.

    New to GPS

Observe, and cycle, the 'button' where the arrow is pointed. The mystery will soon be solved.

    New to GPS

I am somewhat familiar with the Gaia and Garmin ecosystems, but have no experience with carplay. I advise to spend the $20 and try it. Whether the UI suits you or rubs you the wrong way---you'll only find out by trying to use it. Gaia should be be fine on your 32GB iPad as long as Gaia...

    Expedition Sandals

Yeah, hiking and sandals never went together for me. What about the little pebbles and other small debris that show up under your feet about every 10 feet? Just keep stopping and shaking them out?

    Backpack/Sling

I'll try that for my beloved but worn out Osprey pack; I sent it to Osprey for them to install a new zipper---they refused to repair it, and instead told me to pick a new replacement from their website. Very nice, but I really liked the design of the old one!

    Backpack/Sling

I have been impressed with the design features and build quality of Osprey packs in recent years. Also they have good customer service. Like all companies, they discontinue the products that I really like. First thing is decide what size you need for a 'day away from car or camp.'

Which maps do you use in Gaia?

Nothing wrong with old school! The things that make Gaia (or similar) nice to use are: 1. You have an adequate available storage capacity on your mobile device (an iPhone Xr for me). Right now Gaia maps are occupying 24.6 GB of data space on my phone. I probably will add more maps in the...

Which maps do you use in Gaia?

Hmmm...The USGS/ESRI choice is still there (see screenshot taken just now) on my $20 subscription. A quick look at the current ESRI offering shows that it still looks the same, but it'd be impossible for me to tell if they've re-created it using OSM data.

Which maps do you use in Gaia?

The one called "USGS Topo, ©ESRI and USGS". It's the only map on the $20/year map sources list mentioning ESRI in the title. They appear to be at somewhat lower resolution than the plain USGS 24K topos on Gaia, but have a vector-like effect (probably the terrain shading at work) that makes...

Which maps do you use in Gaia?

I use Gaia on the phone ($20 subscription level) to see where I am on the map, mark waypoints, and very occasionally record a track if hiking in an unfamiliar area. I occasionally look at their maps on the home computer, but have only rarely created routes. To download a map: On the phone...

ARB Awning Install: 3rd Gen 4Runner w / Stock Roof Rack

This is old and of limited interest, but it's a good example of why you shouldn't use image-hosting sites for photos in the forum.

Which maps do you use in Gaia?

Gaia Topo underwent a major improvement a while back...maybe 1.5 to 2 years or so...and now is extremely useful. I like the ESRI enhanced USGS 7.5 maps also.

Scepter MFC and MWC more widely available.

I'm not krik3tt, but I owned/used Scepter MFCs for a few years. They the stunk up any room/shed/storage area I kept them in. Last I checked, the armed forces doesn't care much about smells.

I bought the CTEK US 25000 (25 Amp max) because it was on Odyssey's list of recommended chargers for a 62 AH...and larger... battery.

Will any of the Garmins have better GPS than phone?

I don't remember whether whether or not wifi was turned on at the time; I'll certainly try turning off wifi next time it happens.
