There was the one guy who put in an Isuzu 4BD (I think) diesel into a D2. If I recall correctly he did a phenomenal job but it was a nightmare build that took a couple years to finally sort out. I agree that the new Cummins crate diesel could be the more interesting motor... but with the TD5...

People had the exact same reaction when the LR3 went to the split over the D2's swing-out. It was the end of days there for awhile. As you point out, the split is awesome. I think we'll all grow to like the D5.

it was the hood switch on mine -- identical issue it can also be one or several of your door locks as well -- hopefully not, as more expensive to replace. but most likely the hood.

Looks like a run of the mill mid-1980s Ninety to me, with an aftermarket/painted grille. It's definitely not a G4 truck or a SV -- those are just stickers. And it looks spray painted. Left hand drive is certainly unusual for these kinds of Defenders and definitely a plus.

With a $15k budget, and you're in the military (as I am) and starting a family, etc., just get an LR3. The LR3/LR4 are far and away the most solid trucks Land Rover has ever made for anyone that isn't doing the Rover thing as a full-time job/hobby. If you're like me, and tried the truck...

If they haven't been done yet, you'll be replacing the thermostat (cheap), air compressor and the front lower control arm bushings within the first year or two. Brakes as well. +/- $3k at a dealership, depending if you replace the control arm assembly or just have them do the bushings. That's...

Spend the extra $4k on an LR3. You won't regret it.
