    FJ Cruiser test ride today

My wife is in a 2012 Ford Escape. It's on of the viscous setups that works automagically. I like that she doesn't have to know when to shift into 4-hi or when to shift out. It just works. I was primarily telling the OP that when it comes to shifting a manual t-case, he's doing it wrong.

    FJ Cruiser test ride today

As opposed to the viscous variants and some of the vacuum or electronically-shifted cases. I'm not familiar with enough of them to say EVERY transfer case requires the vehicle to be in neutral to shift to 4-low. I colloquially referred to them as "real" transfer cases as that's how those of us...

    Smittybilt RTT Annex Room Design

I have the Smitty RTT too, but no annex. Still, I wonder how Tepui set theirs up differently.

    Coleman 3 Buerner

It's worth what you paid/sell it for. The collectors will tell you it's worth $8. 426s aren't nearly as common as the 425s, but there's plenty around. Also, just because it's old doesn't mean it's valuable. That's not to say there isn't old Coleman stuff fetching a pretty penny, but if it's...

Ditch Lights on a 2011 F-150 XLT Crew Cab

Didn't know there was a name for such lighting! I put mine in because I was drunk and thought it would be a cool place to have lights. I have a 32" bar in the bumper. With the "ditch lights," headlights, and the light bar, I have a full 180° of light out front. It's great on trails and those...

    FJ Cruiser test ride today

On rigs with real transfer cases, you are almost always supposed to shift the transmission into neutral before shifting the t-case into 4 low. The FJ is no exception: Page 137 http://brockandbecca.com/files/fj/FJ_Cruiser_Owners_Manual.pdf

Little mods/upgrades/additions that make a big difference

The links are in my original post. The switch works by breaking the ground when the hood is shut. It requires the lights to be wired as always hot. This configuration is normal on modern vehicles. I pulled wire through the support structure of the hood. I can get pics of my routing if you need them.

Little mods/upgrades/additions that make a big difference

I have aftermarket trailer wiring. It has a control box that's powered from the battery. I jumped off of it to power the 12v and USB. The light is on all the time, but would be fairly simple to remove if desired.

Little mods/upgrades/additions that make a big difference

I have several suggestions! $9.16 for 4 plus a few dabs of solder. http://www.ebay.com/itm/371251531398 I replaced the interior lights with 2 of these LED cards in each fixture. $9.57 for 3 additional charging options. http://www.ebay.com/itm/131773260951 $6.59 for two 6" led panels plus...

    Shovel recommendations? Seems simple but....

As you saw breaking your shovel, 2 is 1 and 1 is none. I always carry a Vietnam-era mil-surp e-tool. My old one had rusted in place, so when got the new one, I disassembled it and coated everything with copper antisieze. When we go out, I put an axe and a 3/4 length shovel on the roof rack.

Go Pro mounts for GPS and iPad

I think I spent about $13 on a giant assortment of generic mounts made to Go Pro specs. Everything from selfie sticks to floating handles with a dozen 3M adhesive pads and mounts or so. I avoid the Go Pro branded mounts simply because they are overpriced, but the system works quite well.

Transmission cooler vs just using radiator 2005 Unlimited

I'm in VA and have NEVER regretting putting a big, fat trans cooler in. I've always used an inexpensive Hayden cooler rated 10,000 lbs or greater. Most recently I used http://smile.amazon.com/Hayden-Automotive-516-Performance-Transmission/dp/B000C3BBEY

Most popular stove's used in Overlanding

I'm running a 1965 Coleman 425. Simple to clean, simple to fix, in a pinch, the Coleman fuel can be used in the vehicle. I carry a spare generator just in case and I have a single-burner butane for backup.

    RTT on a full-size van?

Your ladder position tells me our mounting heights are similar. I carry a telescoping ladder. I don't know how I'd reach to install/remove the rain fly otherwise. http://amazon.com/dp/B00AQ2CC2Q As for the body shifting, there's plenty of ways to create simple stiff legs that fit between the...

How frequent to clean camelback and what to use?

If you're using tap water, just let it air dry after use. If you've put tea or something else in it, rinse it and let it air dry. If you've left god knows what in it and it's green inside, a soft bottle brush and a bleach solution will clean the bladder and a shoelace with a knot or two in the...
