Single band vs dual band value

I don't see anything wrong with what you selected, all from well known companies. If you can swing the extra $200 the D710G does APRS and voice at the same time and from what I have read does it better than the Yaesu FTM-400. The Kenwood V71 and D710G and the Yaesu 7900 and 8900 are getting a...

Single band vs dual band value

I agree. I still try to make people aware of the rules because I have found many times they aren't aware, especially when using the business band with these "off road radios". The rest is up to them. I also agree that as long as the radio you are using is programmed with the proper bandwidth and...

Single band vs dual band value

I'm not the "rag chew" with strangers type of person. I don't care what you had for breakfast, what doctor you are going to today, what radio equipment you are using, what the weather is like, that you had to learn CW to get a license, etc etc etc. I do however like the short exchange of DX and...

Single band vs dual band value

Using a ham radio on FRS frequencies with FRS restrictions is still a no-go even with a GMRS license.

Single band vs dual band value

But don't do all the work Dave mentions....... and then mount the antenna on your bumper or fender. If you want range get the antenna up high. In LOS (Line of Sight) communication, height is king.

Single band vs dual band value

A 2m monoband will certainly get you by and be sufficient. When I was looking for my first mobile radio I too was leaning towards a 2m only radio to save a few $$, but then I learned that the largest linked repeater system in my state was on 70cm and decided having the capability to do both...

    Mobil Hotspot

We had a mobile hotspot for awhile and used it as home and on trips but when we got unlimited data plans on our phones we just hotspot from one of them and save $60 a month. Either way it's a life saver on trips especially when you have 3 kids.

    GMRS antenna recomendations

This will vary person to person depending on the terrain/environment they were in when using the radio.

    HAM Operators- Post up here

Any of the big 3 (Kenwood, Yaesu, Icom) that tickle your fancy would likely be a solid radio. They range from $269 - $600.

Or maybe even a simple fender bracket could work. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LMH1L5S/?coliid=I2YGKL3EAI3V0H&colid=2UUJF0X50SZKL&psc=0&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it

    1993 work Jeep build

Put a multimeter on the battery while it is running and see what voltage reading you get. The gauge in my 93 will read low, sometimes 10volts, but always 13.8-14.3 at the battery and it starts every time. I would look into a steering box brace as well once you get that fixed up. I have an...

    GMRS antenna recomendations

I have had good experiences with tram/browning antennas and if you like the lower profile the Tram 1181 may be worth looking at. Based on the SWR plot posted in one of the reviews it shows to be pretty good. The antenna is only about 19" long and shows to have 2.5 Dbd gain on UHF. Though it is...

Amateur Radio & CB antenna - redux

Also keep in mind with line of sight communication that height is everything. The VHF antenna may be better off on a fender mount. It will still be below the roof line but will at least be above the hood.

    Pre-Order Your MXT275 Today!

I don't see anything in the GMRS guidelines about a non-removable antenna on those channels, however part 95.1763 para d. states: " 467 MHz interstitial channels. Only hand-held portable units may transmit on these 7 channels. The channel center frequencies are: 467.5675, 467.5875, 467.6125...

    Ham Radio Field Day

This year we ran 7A rather than 3A as we had done for at least the last 4 years that I have helped. We had always used a tri-band beam (20/15/10) but it was always connected to one radio. This year with use of bandpass filters we connected it to 3 separate radios. We also had a 6m beam on top...

Problems stabilizing a fiberglass rod antenna at highway speeds...

You could also go with a couple Diamond K9000 motorized antenna mounts and put them on the roof with some base loaded stainless whip antennas. Or you could build one yourself with a linear actuator and still run the fiberglass antennas. Similar to this:

Problems stabilizing a fiberglass rod antenna at highway speeds...

You could build an arm from PVC to mount off the roof rack. You could then have a bungee cord coming through the pipe to the antenna, that way if would still give if a branch came along the roof but would snap back into it's "mount". I would of course pad the area where the antenna would contact...

    Android and Ham Radio

How far are you from the digipeater? When I was trying to use a Baofeng with a Mobilink for APRS I had to be within 10 miles+/- of the digi to receive packets. At the time the closest digi was about 25 miles from me and I was using an external antenna. I went to a mobile radio instead (still...
