Saturday arrived quickly as I awoke to photograph sunrise on the peaks above Clear Lake. I wandered around in the twilight and found some nice wildflowers to photograph in the foreground. After sunrise, I packed up and headed down the hill to Silverton for breakfast at Grumpy's. Knowing that...
Little Molas Lake is an easy to reach spot with a nice little campground that seems to be perpetually full. There's good fishing in the lake and the Colorado Trail cuts right through the area. Some day I'm going to mountain bike the CT, at least the section that runs through the San Juans...
Two weekends ago I left Moab for a quick, three-day escape to the San Juan Mountains. I'd grown tired of the oppressive desert heat and red rocks and I knew the Rockies would deliver cooler temperatures and trees. That, and I had to drop off ten prints at the Durango Art Center for an exhibit...
Just took delivery of my 2015 Utah Scenic Wall Calendar and they're available for purchase now! If you're in Moab you can pick one up at my studio (The Edge Gallery at 137 N. Main St.). I can also accept orders from my website and we'll ship one to you.
Additionally, I'll be in the SLC area...
I use an Induro CT113 w/ Acratech Ultimate ballhead. Whole thing weighs about 3.7 pounds but is rock solid, even with my 5D Mark III w/ battery grip and pro lenses.
It's getting to be the time of year when photographers start flocking to Utah's national parks. In the spirit of community I recently published a free guide to photographing Bryce Canyon National Park. You'll find several great locations to photograph and at what times of day you'll want to be...
I made this image at the tail end of a winter storm in Castle Valley just a few days ago. I've not spent much time producing panos but I've had quite a few clients ask for large panoramic prints recently so in 2014 I'm making an effort to meet the demand. Hopefully it'll pay off - literally!
Glad I'm not the only one wondering why a locking rear diff isn't available in the Tundra, especially on an "off-road" package. Just doesn't make sense at all.
I hope it's okay to promote my own workshops in response to your question. I lead private photography workshops in Moab by the half or full-day and I'm leading a 3 day group workshop, also in Moab, October 9-12, 2014. At the group workshop we'll spend considerable time in the field working on...
Lightroom. Incredibly powerful and easier to use than any comparable software. And, it's pretty cheap. If you buy Lightroom and an instructional book, then spend a couple weeks using it, you'll be up to speed quickly.
Last Light at False Kiva
After no fewer than a dozen attempts to photograph sweet light and a dramatic sky at False Kiva I finally succeeded last May. Fun hike, beautiful and spiritual location.
Shadow Play at Metate Arch
I made this image last year on a short family getaway to Grand Staircase-Escalante NM. I don't often photograph mid-day but there are times when the light and shadows can create interesting opportunities.
I immediately thought of this post when I saw news of the merger.
Just one other thought: find an instructor who offers Lightroom and Photoshop classes and spend a day with them. Hell, even just a few hours can do miracles for your processing technique.
I've been using Acratech ballheads for 10 years and I think they're the best you can buy for outdoor photography. One of mine is 10 years old and it works just as well today as it did on day one, despite looking like it's been to hell and back (in many ways it has). Their customer service is...

If you plan on using it for hiking the best you can buy are the packs made by f-stop gear. If you're primarily shooting roadside, the Tamrac will be fine.
This is very well done, especially considering the limited equipment you had. Just goes to show you don't always need a big, expensive camera to make compelling images.
