Yeah I wouldn't drive it like that (or start it again), the 3.8 is easy. There are some timing service videos you can follow on Youtube. Get your tensioner from the dealer or in an Asian kit, the OEM part is NOK brand.
It's a lot less work to swap a 1UZ VVTi, and I'm a diehard Mitsu guy, love turbos but time and $$$ per horsepower gained would have me looking at other options to compare.
