yes, only works with center diff lock on. Although the center diff lock is actually a mechanical thing you engage with the lever, the locker won't work unless you've got that light lit up. For mine, if I don't use the center diff lock for a while, it might take a few hundred yards of driving...
96 is 4.63 gears, 98 as 4.27 gears
Not sure about OBD2 in the 96, but it's there in the 98
DOHC in 96 vs SOHC in 98. I think the 96 also has butterfly flap in the intake that some have reported as coming loose and falling into the engine... many will remove that.
I'll have to watch the video again, but it kooks like you have a lot of play in the wheel... But that could be just you reacting to the bumps.
Have you put the front end up on jack stands to see if there is any turning play in the wheels if you grip and apply force at 9and 3?
take a look at the FSM.. I pulled my center console apart and it was pretty easy (I did have the front seats out at the same time)
The only "gotcha" was a 2nd screw to remove the drive selector (PRND). There is one screw on the side, and one just at the base of the shifter piece that you...
I'm sure that would work... but better to line up the cams on the marks and then put the belt on.....feels like there has been a few threads on timing belt recently... do a bit of a search and I'm sure you'll find some tips.
FOllow the FSM and you'll be ok
I found that I turn the crank shaft...
I have to pull up a picture from the FSM to do mine. I don't think it matters too much where you start...
To make it easier, you probably want to remove the fan. there are 4 10mm nuts that hold the fan onto it's pulley. With the belt in place there is enough tension to undo the nuts without...
I just put it a tad beyond flush with the surrounding surface. I skipped it on our '03 when I did the timing belt in November last year.... had to do the timing again to replace those seals in May. Would have saved myself hours of work by taking care of it when I had front of the engine off :-)
do them now... it isn't difficult... I use a flat blade screwdriver to puncture the seal and then start pulling at it with pliers and whatever else I can use. The seal can go into the head, there isn't back stop on it... so be careful that you don't push it in too far.... My driver's side went...
http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/members/66984-XterraMatt doesn't look like he is too active here. Might have luck tracking him (and his rig) down at http://sccxterra.com/
how many miles?
do you have a couple pictures of the crack in the timing cover? While it will be a little bit of work to wrench one off of a junked vehicle, you should be able to get one pretty easily from LKQ. I don't really read about them cracking, so most others should be crack free.
Do...
