    I wonder if it could be something with a torque converter not locking at higher speeds? There's a blue 2.5 at LKQ in sun valley with the engine already pulled. 170k on the clock. should make the tranny that much easier to pull out if you're looking for a possible replacement. :-)

    if you're doing the seals, you might want to replace the hydraulic lash adjusters. not too expensive to do them all, and you have to remove the rocker arms anyway to get to the valve seals. something like this should also work for holding the crank. I built it for just a few bucks and a trip...

    on the gen 2.5, 3.5L engine, you don't have to pull the heads to do the valve seals. That makes it easier, but isn't necessary on the 2.5. I would suspect that the same is true on the early gen 3, because I'm pretty sure it is the same engine.

    Yes, replace lash adjusters for sure... it's likely that a few will fall apart when removing the rockers

    if the valve seals are leaking (aka smoking) you don't need to replace the engine, you just need to do the valve seals. it isn't too difficult, just time consuming. Here is a video I put together showing one of the valve seals being replaced.
