So you think your FJ40 is tough?!

It looks like more wood, there must be 3 or 4 tons of it!

So you think your FJ40 is tough?!

My truck would have squirted its guts out the tail pipe before breaking everything.

Tire chains, snow, mud, and airing down.....

I run into the icy slopes issue constantly out here. During the hunting season its the worst because you have plenty of guys packing the snow into ice wherever they can possibly get. There are many places where studs and siped snow tires would easily slide off, heck even v-bar chains are still...

Tire chains, snow, mud, and airing down.....

I certainly made it farther with four chains, I had to retreat when one broke. There were some wind blown icy slopes that one would never have even attempted without chains. In fact there is another thread going on that talks about a vehicle sliding down an icy road towards a drop but the guy...

    Has anyone done this?

I see, have you looked into the jumping jack trailers that are a pop up style canvas tent below a platform that you can drive the Atv onto? http://www.jumpingjacktrailers.com/ Might get messy if your herb nozzles drip!

    Has anyone done this?

Could you possibly ditch the dodge, rhino and trailer for something that could handle both the on and off-road? Say a modified toyota or Jeep?

    4307's Canadian Taco Build

Subscribed:victory: You have a very unique set of skills in that you can imagine, design, and then build some amazing things. Most people can't do even one of those things to your capabilities. You sir are a metal savant! I was a little disappointed that you didn't opt to make a front bumper...

    3/4" x 3/4" Bracket - Help?

If you can't find anything you can easily make the 42 brackets. Buy to pieces of angle iron and a piece of flat stock. Then weld them all together, drill and chop saw them into individual brackets. If you can't, a welding shop certainly can. __ _l l_

Tire chains, snow, mud, and airing down.....

I bet! It would also help if I wasn't running skinny 255's :) Thanks for the bucket trick!

Tire chains, snow, mud, and airing down.....

This thread was on my mind so I did a little experiment to see just how far I could go using a few techniques. I started out at 40psi (because that was what was in my tires.) When that stopped working I went to 20psi (didn't help much) So I went 10 psi and the advantage was very significant...

    Snow Photos - LR3

I haven't done a full autopsy because I was more concerned with getting unstuck but i snapped a shot for the warranty people. The snow depth you encountered looked similar: I bet you could air down closer to 5psi without blowing the bead. Snow is much more forgiving that way.

Tire chains, snow, mud, and airing down.....

I went out and camped last night, broke one of four chains. It was pretty deep stuff and they worked well but I'm really considering those custom Clothier chains mentioned before. A broken chain is a big liability to the cv's and brake lines!

    Snow Photos - LR3

Nice! that looks like a blast, were you solo? I went snow camping last night but I'm having trouble with my camera so the photo's will have to wait. I did a little experiment to see just how far I could go using a few techniques. I started out at 40psi (because that was what was in my tires.)...

    Roof Rack dilemna

I would much rather build a larger fuel tank, add a lowered water tank and put the spare underneath, or on a swing out carrier than deal with 250lbs on the roof. I don't think its possible for everyone to see eye to eye on this. People that crave good vehicle handling will never concede, just...

    Roof Rack dilemna

You're right, he is a complete unqualified rookie. I wonder what makes him think he is even entitled to an opinion on such matters  Perhaps you and Snagger should abandon this site and start a new one called, "Roof rack dependent travel." Forum topics could include: "Physics don't apply...

    Sleeping bags-canvas vs ripstop/poly

That is very true, but he stated he wants a double size for his RTT so I doubt he will ever pack it. Good point about sleeping warm, this article explains the temp ratings and how they differ: http://adventuresportsonline.com/sleepingtemp.htm

    Roof Rack dilemna

I read everyone's postings. :) I brought attention to that particular post so people wouldn't make the same mistake I did and mount the RTT too high or wish they hadn't bought one. I had heard the same warning but thought it wouldn't be that bad, sure I wouldn't do it to my race car but a...

    Sleeping bags-canvas vs ripstop/poly

The only difference is that the ripstop is a bit lighter and it breathes better. Canvas will be a little more bulky but less likely to rip if caught in the hinge of the RTT or its own zipper. I'm not sure if you intend to camp in the extreme cold or not, but I would buy a bag that was rated 20...

    Mountain Khaki Pants

Actually hunting is why I dislike many synthetics. Most animals are too savvy to be caught by something that sounds like a large potato chip bag. I have a pair of nylon analog pants that I love for cutting firewood and skiing though!
