Tire chains, snow, mud, and airing down.....

Thank you for that detailed explanation, you obviously have plenty of experience in the matter! People that haven't used good v-bars on all fours or spent every winter wheeling don't realize how well chains work. If people like challenging trails and adventure, they should love winter...

Okay so RTT's who's got one?

I have a 1400 EZi-AWN T-top. Mounted on my tacoma. I really debated over the cost of it, but once deployed I was so thankful I spent the extra cash!! I love the versatility of the T-top because I can camp for a long time in inclement weather and have loads of standing room. or I can just...

    Mountain Khaki Pants

Oil finished cotton like what Filson makes is actually very good in inclement weather. Its totally wind and water proof. You also have wool that maintains 80% of its insulation when wet, and down that is very warm, light and packable. Natural clothing is also very comfortable because it breaks...

    Ford V-10 reliability?

They reliably drink fuel better than most. They are reliable however, we have one in our work fleet that has only had one major issue, a cracked y-manifold. I would avoid them like a mouth kiss from a leper because of the mileage though.

Looking for Butane/Propane (LPG) Fuel Canisters

I was thinking about this route, not sure if you remember seeing it on my counter or not. It would take an inverter and some mounting genius of course...

Looking for Butane/Propane (LPG) Fuel Canisters

Are you using those for your stove, and lantern? If so how many do you burn through in a week? I initially went that route but switched to propane. I run a heater also, so I needed a bit more fuel on board. I have an 11 lb tank now that is tall and slender...

Looking for Butane/Propane (LPG) Fuel Canisters

One option is to buy an adapter to refill the 1lb disposable tank. http://www.navagear.com/2009/08/how-to-refill-disposable-propane-cylinders/ The other option is to forget the disposable tank and run say an 11 lb tank with a hose adapter to the appliance...

Tire chains, snow, mud, and airing down.....

EDIT: Didn't see your post Martyn so mine looks like plagiarism :) The thing to keep in mind is that the Earth's materials, whether it be snow, mud, dirt, sand, etc., are infinitely variable in composition and character, so one solution or set of experiences is not that encompassing. For...

    Come-along

You bring up a valid point that most snow and ice situations can be handled with a set of aired down studded tires. I've seen many people wrestling chains on when it wasn't needed, they could have gotten by with studded winter tires or packed a compressor to air down. The problem we have up...

    Doc's 05 Tacoma Build Thread

Those are nice chains to for side hills also, I pack one set all year, and two sets in the winter. The second set are heavy V-Bar but you don't want to run them on the highway! I also carry a small chainsaw so I can cut pads to set the hi-lift on or cut down dead trees to bridge out of the deep...
