So I scored some parts this weekend for the front suspension conversion. I got all of the front suspension, differential and CV axles from a 2000 Z71 for $200. Fresh rotors, pads and wheel bearings. Planning on fabbing mounts to mimic stock mounts on the Z71 so I will end up with the same track...
I am now leaning towards using full size GM IFS and diff from a Z71. Wider, stronger, more travel, stock parts for easy repairs. I can essentially duplicate the factory control arm mounts from a Z71 onto my frame. The diesel swap should happen first though so I can build the rest around that.
No need just a want and a goal. I can easily fit them in the back and have built the camper box to accommodate them so if I can, I want 35s for the ground clearance they will offer. I could just put 35s on the current setup and remove the fenders and build tube flares but I would still have...
I guess you don't know how fast the suspension components wear on these trucks in stock condition. That's not gonna cut it. It also doesn't address the other needs of fitting 35s with as little lift as possible. Widening my track width and and bigger fender flares should allow me to fit 35s at...
Excellent perspective. I think I will shoot for 3.73 then as that will bring my cruise RPM down to 1900rpm at 73mph
I always use this calculator.

Good info. Thanks. Was thinking about gearing and tires the other day. Seems like 4.10 gears and 35s should get me around 70 mph at 2000 rpm. Not sure if 3.73 gears would be too tall
I got my matress last week. Queen size, 4" thick Paco Pad form Jack's plastic welding in New Mexico. It's basically a huge thermarest built from white water raft material. It's about 35lbs to not terribly heavy. It can serve double duty as a floating platform and or car camping mattress. It's...
I am sort of leaning towards adapting bigger GM components and keeping IFS.
GM 8.25" diff and suspension from any number of GM trucks. Maybe make custom arms and use the bigger 6 bolt hub knuckles and a custom coilover setup. This will get me the wider stance that I want, minimal lift, etc...
I am not planning on a 6BT. Maybe "really heavy" was exaggerating in terms of diesel engine weight :) But.... Even though I don't plan on towing anything except maybe a small storage trailer. It towed pretty well stock. I made several cross country trips with it, trailer in tow with a car...
^^ Completely useless reply but thanks. Reference Shovel and Kevin 108s posts for how to make a helpful post.
Or feel free to elaborate. Do you mean that only a rock crawler could benefit from this? Should I just plop a really heavy diesel on top of an already subpar IFS setup? Have you had a...
