Was this combination available? A 4wd, 4cyl with a 5-speed in the 1996-2000 4Runner (I believe that 2000 was the last year of any manuals in the 4Runner lineage).

Thanks KC. I have seen a few 2wd's, but not any 4wd's. Now finding one in white, with low mileage will be even more tricky ;-)

It was a combo in theory, although it's not common. When I bought my truck I had to look for a few weeks to find a 22R-E in an XtraCab 1989-1991 (didn't want a '92+ for various reasons). Keep an eye out and be patient, one will eventually come up and you'll maybe have to go get it from some place. I know of one 1997 3RZ-powered 3rd gen up in Ft. Collins, but it was a city vehicle that was auctioned at 10 years old. It was not what I would call a pristine example, it was beat up pretty bad.

Uh, just looking at those EPA stats, I have a question: Why?

I mean, I totally get wanting to save money, and in fact would challenge anybody on this board to a "cheap-off"* :D But 17/21 is what my V-6 Tacoma was rated at and I can beat that every time (18/19 in the city and 21-24 on the highway.) If the 2.7 gave you a significant MPG advantage I could understand but given the negligible benefits, why get the 4 cyl over the (presumably more common) V-6? I know the early Toyota V-6's had head gasket issues but AFAIK that problem was cured by 1990-92 or so, wasn't it?

* Look up "cheap bastard" in the dictionary and you'll see my picture ;)

I have zero experience with the 3RZ or 5VZ, heck with anything newer than 1991 really. But I didn't know the 3.4L V6 got as good or better mileage than the 2.7L 4 cylinder. If that's the case, then I don't know that it makes as much sense. One reason that I like the 4 cylinder trucks is working under the hood is so much less of a PITA because it's not shoe horned in. In the 22R/3VZ comparison there is a bigger aftermarket for the 20/22R motors and to some extent that's true of the 2/3RZ.

I am officially in the market for a 96--2000 4Runner. My 2006 Dodge Power Wagon is to expensive to operate.

I have a reason for needing that combo, but if I told you... Well, you know. :gunt:

It will be built for maximum efficiency and light-weight, while satisfying certain "requirements". Just in the planning stages now, as I am waiting for a few things to fall into place first. I am willing to wait for the right one.

Actually, the V6 might end up being the better choice because of component redundancy with my truck and others I travel with (belts, hoses, alternators, etc.). Manual trans. and white will not be optional ;)

I think there were a few years of 4Runner production where the factory locker was available, that might be an option to look out for as well since you're in no hurry.

That would be a very rare truck. Third gen 4Runner, 3RZ, 5 speed and locker. There was a period when you could order the locker as an option without buying a TRD package. But that AFAIK was only like 1996, 1997. It then became an option only with the TRD package, which I think required a V6. If you want the rear locker factory installed, I think you really have to allow for a little wiggle room and get a V6. A buddy of mine has a 1999 4Runner with a 5 speed and factory locker, but it's a TRD and has power windows & locks and that sort of fancy stuff.

While were talking rare Toyotas... another rare 4Runner that I drool over when I see one is the 1990 two door 4Runner...

Yeah, I don't want the fancy stuff. I want the power nothing package :)
A/C of course though.

Don't care about the factory locker. I would not likely fit lockers in it. Maybe just a TruTrac.

They made a 2 door version up until 1993 (discontinued for 1994).
