Aren't you afraid of loosing engine longevity by removing those oil screens? I would imagine you are voiding the warranty as well.

Some 4-Stroke dirt bikes have oil screens, they are there for a reason, like catching metal debris.

KTM's have replace kits.

So I have been busy. The field season is starting late and my wreck has made life "interesting". So I have added the Bilstien 5100s, the slotted rotors, Hawk brake pads, stainless steel lines and am scraping out the rig for travel to SE NM. The stupid topper is taking forever to be built by Snugtop and my Bedslide still isn't in the state yet. 3 weeks is quickly turning into 6 weeks+......

I reattached the front sway bar, even with better shocks the front springs are not up for the task of controlling body roll. Cross winds were beating me up because the truck wanted to track all over the place.

First impressions for the Bilstiens is "wow" then quickly followed by ehhhh.... The bilstines use a high gas pressure so the shocks have a great road feel. However the rebound valving is a little light and the truck will bounce a little more than what I wanted. The Timberns are not help that as they kick in and add spring rate to the suspension. If you are just doing a shocks upgrade try a set of OME nitro charges, I think those are going to be on next year's parts' list when these wear out.

Kermit - KTM's screens are designed to be cleaned and or replaced as the transmission spits steel into the shared oil between the transmission and the engine (I just helped my friend change the oil in his 2006 640 adv) The Toyota screens are not easy to access or listed as "wear" parts to be serviced or cleaned at any interval.

And if the filters clog the VVTi actuated dies from oil starvation requiring a new top end rebuild anyway.

I see the screen as a part installed by a overzealous Engineer/Lawyer that was trying to do the right thing but stopped 1/2 way through. if the screens were ment to be cleaned and then put back I would do that. Clean it and then put it back, but the oil filter will catch any carbon gunk that's floating around in the engine and frequent oil changes keep the likelihood of gunk building up in the engine.

And when it's removed the engine sounds nice and has better "drivabality".

I think it's worth a little smoother mid/top end power delivery and I don't have to worry about the screen getting junk in it and killing the motor. A friend of the family went through three or four turbos in his Subaru because of misplaced screens.Subaru kept replacing the turbos and not understanding the problem. The aftermarket solution was to yank them due to oil starvation problems and change the oil more often to prevent carbon build up.

However you can also just leave it alone and drive the Toyota.

Thanks.

I am just not hearing of any engine failures because of the screens, if there was, there would be massive amounts of backlash, like what Ford is experiencing with the ill fated 6.0 PSD.

Are you voiding your warranty by removing the screens?

kermit - Correct I have not heard of a Toyota failure due to these filters. My initial googeling was a loss of performance/mpg. and this popped up on several forums as a possible "thing to do". Kind of like cleaning the idle air controller after 50k miles or cleaning the mas air flow sensor. I decided to pull the filters to clean them and ruined one which has led to my thoughts on pulling them...

I have no idea if this would void the warranty. However if something did turn it's self to shrapnel and decide to move around in the oil lines having these screens would not really do anything to protect the rest of the motor from destroying itself.

But to CMA - Do this at your own risk!!!!

Sorry to hear about your 5100's. I have them on my XJ and have had good luck with them. I will say that I wont be buying another set though, I'll probably go with some resi shock that can be rebuilt.

Wainiha - I know right? I want to see my topper/bed set up too!! The topper will have a matching roof rack to the front cab, I have an extra Rhino rack screen and have been collecting lots of misc Thule parts to get it to work. I will use three bars on the cab and three on the topper. The bed slide may get shelves too depending on how weight gets distributed and rear visibility.
Shovel mounts in the bed alongside the bedside, some form of ladder mount/tie down for my collapsible ladder, a yeti cooler, one toolbox side of the topper will be for First aid/Emergency gear. The other side will be for long equipment storage.

Brentc - Live and learn. I was expecting more of a "night and day" difference in handling and didn't get that. However I have only a few hundred miles on the shocks and less than 2,600 on the rig. I'll give it a few months. Fortunately shocks are wear items so next year or the year after I will be replacing them anyway.

I like my Icons. Maybe they are a different price range though.

I really wish I could set up my truck with a shell and RTT. Not much for expedition in a vehicle here, more on foot. My build would be work truck/tsunami survival truck.

Horney- thanks for the link. O&L are the oil control valves couldnt find Z. I found a pdf file and it shows the oil path and still no luck. Here's the pdf link if your interested.

BTW thanks for helping even though its not tacoma related.

No problem, if you are adventurous the oil control valves "might" house a screen. After skimming through the pdf it looks like the rav 4 is all about the fuel economy...

Wainiha - Totally different price range - I really like the race runners, Icons and Fox products but the price tag is a little scary.

Thanks Horny for taking a look. I pulled the OCV's to check and no filters forgot to mention that. Again, thanks for skimming through the pdf I spent most the day reading and could'nt find anything about screens/filters for the vvti. You must be right its all about the MPG.

I figure you are probably completely tied up with work this time of year, but did you ever get in the topper and bedslide? Anything new?
