The 4Runner is smaller and lighter than the 1999 Land Cruiser, but not by a lot. Dimensional information for the 4Runner is hard to find online, but I did come across these numbers on the Yotatech web site

2010 Toyota 4Runner
Length 189.8 inches
Wheelbase 109.8 inches
Width 75.8 inches
Height 70.1 inches

compare with
1999 Toyota Land Cruiser
Length 192.5 inches
Wheelbase 112.2 inches
Width 76.4 inches
Height 73.2 inches

Comparison test would be sweet. Go Toyota!

You can buy a 99 LC for cheap. Lets say 20k in upgrades for the 99.

The new 4Runner Trail grade has

KDSS - Can not add
Smaller size - Can not shrink a 100
Crawl Control - Can not add
Terrain Control - Can not add
Side curtain airbags - Can not add
22 mpg highway and 17 city - Can not add

The 99 is 10 years old.

I am 100 series fanatic however this Trail grade 4Runner is the first vehicle that has actually made me stop and think about getting something else. I will more than likely just keep driving the 100 for another 100k miles (10 years). I am at 157k now.

You can keep your airbags and electronic aids. Put them side by side Ill take the LC.

I agree !!! I have 4th Gen that I love, but overall this is a much better, and more truck looking. Much less mall crawler.
I'd hardly call your truck a Mall Crawller. ;) you have one fine Toyota there mate.

Cheers

I too like it...a lot. That first pic in the thread made me say "Ooh, nice." I haven't been turned on by a new design in quite awhile. The numbers from the V-6 are impressive to say the least.

When Robbie (Powderpig) was at my house this summer he had told me about the new design and that he heard you might be able to fit 35"s without a lift due to the wheel well design. It intrigued me to say the least, however I didn't think I would like it as much as I think I do.

I'd love to know if they made the seat cushion height more along the lines of the Land Cruiser/Sequoia platform or if they stuck to the previous 4Runner/Tacoma height.

I will say that there appears to be a whole lot of electronics in it. Depending on which way you look at it, there are either more features to aid driver's or more features to limit driver input (Which may be viewed as an aid for some).

I think TacoDoc is right on. Wait a year and see how they perform. In the meantime, Redline you can always sell your B@d@ss Mall Hauler! to me and test this new platform out for everybody.

Thanks for the words, but I didn't mean my Mall Crawler, I was referring to a stock 4th Gen... They are pretty low mall crawlers when stock, but with lots of potential :)

You know I love to buy tires and build trucks Amigo :victory:

But I think I should do more travel and less truck building in the next few years and let others lead the way with the new 4Runner. It's tempting, but my little Rocket 88, V8 needs to log some (s)miles.

I agree with you about all the electronics. I think they add some features and may even help skilled drivers drive better in some situations, we shall see. But I would rather have my well developed 'feel' that works in any vehicle. The only electronic feature I like (most of the time, not always) on my 4Runner is A-TRAC. Hill Decent Control is a joke, I can use the brake pedal with much more control than the computer.

Those comments aside, if I was in the market for a new 4x4 utility it would almost certainly be a 2010 4Runner, unless I was looking for a dedicated 'rock crawler' and needed/wanted a straight axle up front.

I see the new 4Runner bringing some respect back to the 4Runner name. While the 4th Gen is a good platform with potential, without mods they are just LOW. This 5th Gen appears to be closer in height to the FJC or the 3rd Gen 4Runner, a more reasonable altitude for a 4x4 that might be used off-highway.

Snip... In the meantime, Redline you can always sell your B@d@ss Mall Hauler! to me and test this new platform out for everybody.

Theres definitely something "nissan patroly" about it, dunno if its the flat ribbed roof.... I don't know, but I do know I really really like it, and will likely be trading in the Tacoma for one at some point.

The mpg comments were based on the fact a kitted hundy gets like 11 and 14 mpg on a great day.

Also, the more I consider it, the more I realize I will have my hundy for sometime. Just love the hundies.

I think it's the straightness of the lines and narrowness of the greenhouse, and that little clipped corner on the rear windows. Toyotas are usually more rounded
