All new 2010 4runner revealed...

I have to smile at the 'Dudes' in the commercials, and 'rugged' terrain they are tackling :)

I'm very happy to see Toyota making the effort to re-ruggedize the 4Runner, and appeal to the 'off-road' types. I really didn't expect such a capable vehicle in the 5th Gen, nor the marketing effort. I'm very pleased the 5th Gen is both capable and being introduced as such. There isn't lots of competition for it either. It should be able to handle all buyers who currently choose the FJ Cruiser, 4Runner, and some of the competition.

LOL

Yeah, that was almost as painful to watch as the Windows 7 install party video that has been making the rounds. :)

I like this truck. I'd go take a good hard look at it. My short list for a new truck would be the JK and this new 4Runner. It's a function of what you want to do with it and expectation levels at that point.

I did forget to mention they are also making an obvious effort to sell the "new" V6, explaining how we don't need a V8 because of the V6's great power. In general they are correct, I'm sure the updated V6 is terrific. But lower RPM V8 torque is still preferred, particularly for heavier towing.

The JK and a new 4Runner would be my short list too if I was looking for a new utility. Obviously the JK will beat the 4Runner on rugged off-highway paths with its live-axle articulation, while the 4Runner is probably noticeably more comfortable/quieter with more power.

I darn near bought a JK but that asthmatic Dodge Caravan 3.6L V6 killed it for me...

Now, this new 4Runner is a real contender. But, I'm up to my eyeballs in mods on my Tacoma so I'll have to pass.

Off Topic:

Your Tacoma Rules where lesser dogs drool :wings:

You are in your second phase build-up and I think it will be better, more refined than the first when you have it dialed.

On Topic:

The 2010 4Runner is going to be great for what it is. I think several years from now it will be one of the highly regarded 'older rigs' that are good 4-wheelers and can be purchased used for a reasonable price, particularly the Trail Edition. Maybe as popular and well regarded as the 3rd Gen 4Runners?

I rtealize these are just actors doing their jobs... but man were those "bros" some serious ************' bags... I love how he talks about how it has now power issues for going down those hills... good to know that the motor can push the truck downhill with ease... good stuff Toyota. No No, you DO NOT NEED the V8... See there, the "dudes" said so. Oh and boy I can't wait to rock out with the "party mode" button.

I tell you it's a damn good thing they made it LOOK fantastic because this vid litteraly made me NOT want to buy one. I do love that there is a version WITHOUT the Low-pro tires and big wheels. That truck looked SWEET. I can't wait to see one with an ARB and full expo kit.

Something I find odd though and I hope to see a change in, there really haven't been too many 4th Gen SAS's and I'm wondering if anyone will tackle the job on this new 4Runner. Now if they'd just make a SFA 2Dr with removable Hard-top we'd really be in business ;)

Cheers

I'm a little late to this conversation, but I like it. I haven't been impressed with the designs of Toyotas newer models, they're all to blah to me. This one is digging into the blunt, square, older styling and I like it. IF I had money burning a hole in my pocket I might think about getting one.

Most of the SAS jobs have been on FJ Cruisers but it is the same drivetrain so a 4Runner would be modified alike.

Toyota.com has added the 2010 to their model lineup and have added a number of things since I last visited ~5 days ago. Of note, to answer some earlier questions, the roll-down rear window is still present, as expected, as shown in the interior fly-through video, and has a 24-gallon tank. Ground clearance is listed as 9.6", as the TruckTrend link mentioned. I'm sure this is a transfer case-area measurement. The front diff will be lower than this. From the side profile shots, it looks like it sits pretty low, but looks decent in the various videos. It looks like the front diff skid plate overhangs and extends back a little ways, which looks a bit odd. It looks like they still have a low-hanging angled crossmember thing that the 4th gens possess. The Trail Edition only comes in black and silver, but most will be happy to know they have the all-important hood scoop.

I definitely like the look and many aspects of it as well, minus the protruding rear lights. I was very pleasantly surprised to read that the dimension increases were all under an inch, but increased the weight by 400+ pounds. I thought for sure they would have increased the dimensions by about the same margins as they did from the 3rd to 4th generation. I feel confident this will be my next vehicle, but I'm aiming for at least 15 years/300,000 miles on my current one, so I plan to wait awhile. Hopefully they come out with a dark blue option by then, which is surprisingly absent.

Undoubtedly, it's the same reason there aren't that many 3rd generations that had it done. It's simply not a good platform to do it on. With a tremendous cost and very minimal advantage, you won't see any change in this trend on the 4Runner.

I think it's time for the first Overland Journal new vehicle comparison test:
Jeep Wrangler Rubicon vs new 4Runner Trail Edition. How about it, Scott and Jonathan?

Yes, Rubicon VS. 4Runner Trail Edition VS. XTerra

We would also likely include an LR3

This could be good!

I'd include the Hummer H3 in there too. Impressive specs right out of the box including front and rear lockers. I'd like to see how it would compare to the Rubicon head to head.
