An Axe - Seriously?

Used mine while camping last weekend to chop up downed tree limbs for fire wood. Will use it again this weekend when I camp as well I'm sure.

I use my axe quite a lot.

I have both a compact folding saw with a 24" blade where the entire saw disassembles and fits in the handle and a Estwing axe.

If we have large enough dead fall around for firewood my friend bucks them to length with the saw (the saw is more efficient/less waste cutting through dead wood) and I split them to the required size for kindling/maintaining the fire.

We don't have huge bonfires so we have no need for huge logs. Both the saw and axe get used for clearing the trail of dead fall off of the trail. A saw and axe are different tools for different uses.

Not to let this thread die....:coffeedrink:

A few weeks ago Ace had 50% off coupon so I picked up Collins for $16. They are made in Mexico now, and certainly not as nice as the high end axes, but for $16 it'll do.
I'd given my other full size to my brother and my lighter 24" handle ax didn't cut it sometimes.

How about this for chopping dead wood in a Zombie Apocalypse?

I'll bite. I live up in Sk. Canada. I was taught never to leave the axe at home. It comes with me when we travel/camp. Always end up needing to split wood and other bushy things. Last trip it also dispatched a deer a truck had clipped on the highway. (Blunt end) The stupid kid just stared at it wondering what to do.

A tire iron or hammer wouldn't have been pleasant to use. (Although anything to not let the animal suffer )

Just a plain jane axe, needs a new handle. It's dried out and starting to crack.

I Love the Tomahawk!! One of the best, most versatile tools/weapons ever made. Great for splitting wood or wigs! Or someone's spinal column as they attempt to flee from your vehicle at a walmart parking lot because they saw a $500 axe strapped to your roof rack and knew they could sell it on here for a premium. :p

Seriously though; I'm notorious for carrying too much gear but I go solo so you can't be too prepared, IMHO. The one time you need something that you don't have you'll wish you did. Especially if you're the only person in the middle of a 660, 000 acre desert preserve.

One of my old pilots (USMC) had a hatchet strapped to his survival vest. LEGIT!! IF I ever had to go mano y mano that would be my weapon of shoice, To hell with the cheesy survival knife.

Anyhoo.... great thread. Helped me kill the vast majority of an otherwise boring rainy NC morning.

Yes! This thread will never die!

My backpacking Cold Steel trail hawk has been awesome. Minimal weight and lots of uses. On a 20lb pack, it's a 10% hit, but I'll take the 2lb penalty. Feels so safe cuddling it when it's dark and dreary outside.

Axes never run out of gas, need a bar replaced, never needs a chain.
All I need to do is run a stone over it, some linseed oil and it'll work 7-24 !!
