Is there an oranized CG in Painted Canyon or just camp anywhere? Can I find the place in the dark?

Yeah super easy to find in the dark, its a one way in, one way out dirt road that goes right into it. You actually go over the canal on pavement and turn left on Painted Canyon Rd.

I believe it's all primitive camping wherever you want. We just setup a short ways in around a few corners and had a small section away from the road to ourselves.

It's not a large canyon so we found what we could. Further in there's some really good spots, but there usually taken by hikers.

Enjoy your trip and take plenty of pics.

For night one camping midway, you might consider near the intersection of Augustine Pass Road. It has some flat areas, although not real large it worked for my group of eight vehicles. The ground there is covered with small stones visible in the photo below, but an air mattress eliminates that.

When I pre-ran the route in Dec. 2007, I arrived there after dark and setup camp solo. I had an interesting sound and light show courtesy of our military. To the south, in the Chocolate Mtn Gunnery Range, there were sounds of helicopters and machine gun fire, maybe a mile or two away, over the hills. Then I noticed aerial flares slowly falling from the sky periodically. A large turboprop aircraft (probably a C-130) circled overhead and south toward the sounds. This went on for about and hour, off and on. Very cool. The C-130 probably had a visual on me with night vision. I hadn't seen any vehicles in hours so I was the only one around for many miles.

An interesting side trip would be to head north on Augustine Pass Road, to do the Augustine Pass-Chuckwalla Spring Detour. This is described at the end of Gold Road to La Paz There are some tight sections for full size vehicles and it's a little challenging (more technical), but the views are spectacular. The biggest challenge is route finding and following the book. It took us several hours to find our way through and back to the Bradshaw Trail, but it is well worth it if you can spare the time.

Basically, you head north through the pass over the ridge of the Chuckwalla Mtns. and down a narrow canyon, eventually descending into a wide wash with views to the north to I-10. Then head east into a mining district and view some more recently abandoned mines. Then climbing up through the Chuckwall Canyon to the ridge again and over to the trail at Chuckwalla Well (a former stage stop). There is a lot of history in the area and the views to the north and south from the razorback are superb.

It took us several hours to find our way through and back to the trail, which shortend the trail run for us, but for me, it was the highlight of the trip. If you can't make the whole detour, try going up the ridge line from the south at Chuckwalla Well. That is easily found, as the trail is visible up the ridge from the Bradshaw. I can provide GPS coordinates for part or all to aid in navigation if you are interested.

For those that couldn't make this trip, I will be leading a group over the Bradshaw Trail on the weekend of April 4-5. I will be starting at the same Arco and heading east. I have not explored the Geode Beds, so that may be on the agenda. All are welcome. I will post info as the date gets closer.

Dang it! I got really excited until I looked at my calendar...I have a big charity event that weekend that I've already signed up for and can't miss now. :(

We are just over two weeks away. I know a few people have offered to bring some fire wood. If you want to bring some logs please do.

I called BLM and inquired about camp fires.

We do not need a fire permit, but I am going to go to the local station and getting one anyway...just in case.

I am going to start a list on the first post for the potluck. Let me know what you plan on cooking and Ill post it up. We should have about 15 people on the trip.

Model, I'll bring side dishes for Sat night (grean beans, noodles, that sort of thing) and and grill turkey burgers for Sun night. I'll bring a box of red wine to share as well. My 7 year old likes to be the bartender.

What time should we have cooking and camp set up for the evening?

Based on our El Camino Del Diablo trip, definitely with enough time to have some daylight. Our first night we got to camp later then I hoped and did all this in the dark, even though it was before 6pm. The second night we were at camp about 4pm, which gave us time to setup, explore the rocks behind us and get dinner done and cleaned up by dark.

I don't recall what time sunset is but guessing 1 to 1.5 hours before sunset, we should be at or near the final camp site. My .02 worth.

I know we are looking forward to this trip! Just over a week and a half away...

I just checked the weekly weather at weather.com and accuweather.com and they are calling for moderate showers during the night in Mecca and Blythe during our trip.

Weather.gov is reporting light clouds and sunny skies for Friday though...not sure which site to go with.

Can anyone decipher the precipitation map?

We should all pray for dry weather.

Yup come on along...just pray for no rain.

If there are lite showers during the evening as the forecast is calling for I would be apt to still go and depending on the chance of showers camp at Wiley's Well Campground Saturday night in case we need to cut the trip short.

But I have a feeling it will be fine.

JD, my 7 year old is coming and was hoping there would be some kids to play with. He specializes in Star Wars skits on the cb.

NICE!! My 8 year old has about 100 action figures and it's always a challenge to get him to cut down his "traveling inventory".

Looking forward to it!
