Daddy's Jeep gettin' some love.

You shouldn't be afraid of doing a brake job either, drum brakes aren't really as complicated as they look. Just get yourself a Chilton's Cherokee maintenance manual and a drum brake tool (less than $10) and don't get ahead of yourself.

Im gonna have to second that. Drum brakes are actually pretty simple. All you need is new shoes and a hardware kit, and your good to go. Of course, I had Dad there to help me, but it wasn't that hard. easily something you could do in your driveway in a day or so.

If you do decide to do your brakes yourself only do one side at a time. that way you can use the untouched side for reference. just remember it is a mirror image. a picture is also a good idea the first time.

Thanks for the encouragement on the brake job guys. It's just one of those things I've never had to do. :)

So, I had plans this weekend to get two things done:

1. drain and fill the tcase to make sure the whine isn't coming from there, due to lack of fluid/old fluid, etc.

2. Swap out my Valve cover gasket to (a) rule out one source of my oil leak (b) access the CCV system to clean it out, and help my slight blow-by/oil in air filter problem.

Well, as all things tend to go, I only got to the valve cover job, as I didn't realize/remember that the NP231 has big flattish 22mm or so fill and drain plugs. I didn't have that size socket and couldn't find my big adj. wrench, so I passed on that job not wanting to mar up the plugs, and not having time to stop by sears or home depot for some quality tools.

Valve cover job went well, though, and hopefully will do a good job keeping the oil where its supposed to be! :)

Nice photos! Also, is that an 8.25?

Thanks!

And yeah, it's a 27 spline 8.25 from a 1995 cherokee.

3.55 gears, open diff, same housing/diff/overall strength as the 29 spline, just smaller axle shafts.

I don't plan on going bigger than 31s or 32's, and I'm VERY easy on this truck, so twisting a shaft offroad is VERY low on my concern list.

What's great is that it's got newer bearings, about 20k left on the brakes, and newish fluid. wicked.

I'm going to get some new ubolts from currie, and gonna need some new pinion yoke straps for the driveshaft. other than that, I'm all set. :smiley_drive:

That's good. Maybe while the axle is out, have you thought about putting on disc brakes? Take them off of a Liberty (KJ) from a junkyard, direct swap.

DEFINITELY considering it. It's going to be a couple hundred even for junkyard parts, but I'm kinda thinking that it might be worth the effort, and I can take my time with the install.

I've got all the tools I need, and definitely feel comfortable taking the tiny bit of material off the caliper mount that is needed.

I LOVE disc brakes, too.:drool: super easy to maintain, and quite a bit better performance listening to those who've done the swap.

Amazing how much more motivated I am in building up this rear axle than I was with the D35..haha!

Actually, if you take all the rear disc brake hardware from a KJ Liberty it will be a direct swap I believe. No grinding like the ZJ swap since the KJ has the same rear axle.

I think you can get it all for under $100 if at the right place. For a couple hundred sounds a bit expensive no?

interesting! I didn't know that the liberty was a "true" bolt-on. (I was definitely aware that they had the c8.25 with discs, though. I actually tossed around the idea of simply cutting off the coil pads, and welding on some leaf pads) Thanks for that info, though!

Agreed, the source makes the biggest difference in pricing. Maybe I'll have to shop around for some liberty parts.

Had some time last night and enjoyed an hour or so outside, during the sunset, while I changing my oil.

I think my Jeep actually smiled at me this morning, as if to say, "AHhhhhh, that's better."

:D

Oh, and I'm honestly leaning towards pulling the trigger on the disc swap. Seems like a no-brainer:

-easiest it's gonna be since the axle is out of the truck
-don't have a timeline, can take my time to do it right and shop for deals
-better braking
-axle shaft retention if I accidentally pop a shaft offroad via the caliper mounts.
-easy replacement of discs/pads when they're due.

Alright, Daddy's jeep is going to be gettin' some more lovin'

"To-Do" List so far:

-Drain and replace: Coolant, Brake fluid, Front and Rear Diffs, Tcase, and Power steering
-Replace two breather hoses from airbox to valve cover, and valve cover to intake manifold (continuing CCV refresh) (Bought and Done)
-New Cap, Rotor, Plugs, Wires, Serp. Belt., air filter, etc
-Install Diff armor on one or both of the diffs when they're apart
-Refresh paint job. (After 2 years my $40.00 paint is holding up WAY better than I thought it would) I'm probably going to go with a black and tan color scheme.
-Install new ZJ steering tie rod and both drag link and tie rod ends. Have it aligned. (finally..lol)
-New crossmember, Transmission mount (rubber isolator), and possibly a skid plate.
-Might finally have a shop look @ the A/C system, too, but then again, I've survived 2 years without a/c so maybe I'll spend the coin on something more pressing.
-solve front sway bar "rub" on winch bumper bolt issue. Not quite sure on that one yet.
