DEFENDER is coming back across the pond

It seems Tata isn't afraid to spend money. If what this article says is true and the new DEFENDER will be "instantly recognizable," it sounds like LR is on the right track. I wish there were pictures of what could be coming to us from across the pond.

Following recent remarks by another senior manager at Land Rover, the firm's former brand head has told just-auto.com more details of the thinking behind the next Defender.

John Edwards, who has just been announced as the head of Jaguar Land Rover's new Individual Products division, recently spoke to j-a about what he terms an "iconic" product, the Defender.

Edwards underlined the fact that the vehicle is "known and loved the world over", and compared it to the original Mini, as a way of hinting at what could be possible for the future.

The next Defender will be "instantly recognised" by anyone who knows the current vehicle and the "core values of dependability and functionality" will be retained. When asked if it might move upmarket, as some sources claim, Edwards noted that "the Defender is a product that isn't too precious", and that one of the things current owners love is "the ability to hose down the interior". Yet, he also stated that the replacement may be "similar to a premium powertool - it won't necessarily be cheap".

Will there be a production gap? Edwards says there will be, but puts a positive spin on this fact by adding that, "journalists never stop asking about this vehicle, which just shows how loved the current model is". Land Rover must cease building it in late 2015 due to the coming of EU6 regulations - there is no point in adapting the current vehicle for that and future safety legislation as annual production is under 20,000 units and the vehicle is nearing the end of its lifecycle.

As for North America, a region where the Defender's lack of airbags has prevented it from being sold for many years, Edwards says yes, the new model will be returning there. He just won't say when, exactly.

The codenames for the future Defender and its variants, plus other information for this vehicle programme are contained in PLDB, just-auto's global database for current and future vehicles. Regardless of what hits showroom floors, not everyone will be happy. The best thing they could do, in my opinion, is model the new Defender after the Mercedes G Class. Get safety up to par, keep the utility aspect, up the comfort but not wrap everything in leather.

...if they can follow the direction Toyota set with the Land Cruiser / Hilux they will do well. Those vehicles are updated and modern but still very relevant to enthusiasts, off highway use, and developing countries.

Or an even closer example: The Wrangler.

Solid axles, diff locks, sway bar disconnects, good low range transfer case, fender space for big tires, rugged/simple/boxy design

yeah but the Wrangler is a domestic only vehicle. You see the TLC and Hilux all over the world and they built much heavier duty versions than they sell in the US.

You've heard of the J8? The Egyptian military version that isn't for sale in the US?

I think the comparison between defender and TLC/Hilux is a little stretched - I think that matches well with a Discovery 4 > TLC comparison.

In my opinion the Wrangler section of the market is filled with the defender overseas. No room for a Wrangler when the Defender has a much larger population. In the US without a defender, the Wrangler has got that area covered.

I read this article earlier and am a bit skeptical of it as well. It'll either not happen at all or come over as a big disappointment in the eyes of the off-road community.

All except the diff locks, other than CDL. Not everyone needs/wants them and in any case they are generally cheaper aftermarket. For those who want them, people have different preferences for the type and there's a good aftermarket support for the various needs.

No, his comparison is good. A Defender compares perfectly with a 7x Series Land Cruiser (VDJ76 vs 110, VDJ78 vs 130, etc.).
