Derek's 'BST' Tundra Build

Love watching this build I wanted a Tundra soooo bad after my dad bought an 06 Double Cab. Fell in love with the Truck and look very heavily at the acces cab like you have but finding a 4wd was difficult and now with a baby on the way that option is dead.. LOL I guess after Im burnt out with my Cherokee it's back to another 4runner which I do love.

Love the stock front bumper on these trucks plenty of ground clearance and light weight.

I hear ya. My Dad as well turned me on to these trucks back in 2000 when he bought the first one on the lot. Yeah with a kid, that puts everything on hold and an Access cab out of the picture, at least a Dcab could be in the future! These bumper are pretty light weight, good and bad I guess. Thanks!

Nice! No more talking tundra! LOL! To answer your question yu posted in sept about the master install kit, yes, you need the master install kit. Since, I know it's been either 30K since they were replaced or are the original bearings. LOL!

Oh you know they are stock! 140K+ miles too lol, so yeah I answered my own question and you're right. After the holidays I'll get rolling on the 4.56's. September to now happened in a blink of an eye, did we have Thanksgiving? And I don't even want to look at my credit card statement now, ahh the holidays!

Hey Derek,

I am wondering about the softopper that you had. I solt my hard canopy and have been interested in the topper. Do you feel that the topper for the 05 Taco fit well. I dont like the way the one for first gen looks larger than truck. The one on yours looks like it fits the way I would want. Leaving lots of room for a rack over the top of it. Your truck looks good man.

Here is a pic of my previouse mods.

It fit ok. It was fine when the topper was up, but it did not like to collapse down because our beds are a little wider than the 2nd gen Taco's and I had to stretch the width of the canopy to attach to the bed rails. It would work well for you and your idea of a rack surrounding it. Also because it was not and exact fit it leak some in the rain. I sold it to get a fiberglass shell like mine now, I'm just weird, I like things that match and are even with everything else. I've been looking at your truck, it looks great. I like the rear bumper, and the glass looks good without having long travel. Really nice!

My bedsides are now pulled and the flares are gone. I got a full 1.5" extra out of the bedsides. The rear bumper is pretty simple, mounts directly on the outside of the frame rails. I did ditch the factory hitch. I went with a class III universal motorhome hitch. You can adjust the width and then bolt it together. I mounted it right in beteween the frame rails. this raised the hitch probably 8 or more inches. Looks much better with the cut rear bedsides.

Not a real good pic but better angle.

Well, no gear install update just yet. New girl=no money...:(. But, I did get a few items that are very useful. Auto tire deflators, and a 10lb Co2 tank. All work well, and makes life much easier!

Well, I canceled the idea of re-gearing and decided to go down in tire size instead. Also, I cannot get this Firestones to stop rubbing. I've smashed everything that needs and doesn't need to be smashed. I've cut all there is too cut, but still they rub. It does not rub at all around town and for the most part off-road, but when I really flex the truck the tires try and rip the fenders off. So, I bought the Cooper Stmaxx in a 265/75/16. I've read nothing but good reviews and I believe Jim is running these as well. Hopefully this is addition by substraction in that I will get some power back along with MPG's, and get rid of the rubbing.

You like the Maxxs. I've been running them for the last couple of months and I think these are becoming my favorite tire. Besides, all the best Tundra's are running them these days.

Oh,congrats on the new girl. This mod is waaaay better than a re-gearing.

Thanks! That is good to hear! I should have them any day, and will have them on next week sometime. I'll let you all know!

Yep, I think I managed to be the first on here with them.I've got about 14,000 miles on them so far. Great tires. I'm sure you'll get rid of the rubbing issue, but I will be curious to see how your gas mileage is affected. I lost about 1 - 1.5 mpg highway going to these vs the 255 ST's.....if it was a prius I'd be upset......did I mention these are great tires?
.
BTW I dig the wheels you've got on your truck Derek

Wait till you buy a ring....then the Harley fund turns into the wedding funds. Tires look good. I've never heard anything bad about Cooper tires.

Very nice rig. What are the specs on the wheels n tires? Do you remember the backspacing?

The tires I have now on the truck that are coming off are Firestone Destination MT 285/75/16. Great tires, just too big for my truck. The wheels are Raceline, not sure the model, but the BS is 4.5". Thanks

I remember when you got your tires, I liked them from then on. We'll see on the MPG's, I'm like you I don't really care since its a truck, but I know it took a hit with these 285's. What I really care about is power. I was going to re-gear to 4.56's, but buying these tires is about half the price of a re-gear not to mention the work involved...Thanks!

Ahh I'm not gong to think about a ring now lol! Don't get a Harley, get a KTM 990 SM with me! We'll see how these Coopers do!

I have 1.25" wheel spacer on as well. These tires would rub no matter what BS i had.

I ended up grinding the pinch welds down to nothing, removing the plastic inner fender liners, then "clearancing" the fender wells with a big ***** hammer to get rid of the tire rub.

Or if you want to do it right, it's not hard to tub out the fender wells slightly where the rubbing occurs, you just have to have to be OK with cutting a couple holes in the floorboard. It's actually a pretty easy mod.

Same here, my pinch welds are gone, along with being beat with a BFH. I always wanted to cut and re-weld, but never had the willingness or time. All to late, tires should be here soon. This might just turn into a tow truck, there are some nice CJ5's and Samurai's on CL!

I wonder why I never had to do anything to my pinchweld. I have 285s and wheels with 4" BS and all I did was remove the mudflaps. Perhaps the non TRD fenderwells are different? I don't have any fender flares like the TRD models do.
