Having read the thread first and then the linked article, I was really wondering where the subject line Jeep was. Finally found mention of the JGC as the recipient.

we can thank Big Oil for keeping the diesel's off our shore.

...Ummmmm no...Big EPA...you know one of the Big agencies part of the Big Gov't....is the culprit. They hate diesel with a passion and they are doing everything they can short of banning diesel engines all together. If CARB had there way they would ban all diesels from the state of CA today. And the EPA does whatever CARB does.

I am in the diesel engine business and I have survived EPA98, 04, 07, 10 and I am getting ready for 13. My days are numbered just like the diesel engine in America. Hopefully I can eek out another 20 years.

While i fully agree Big Oil is a big backer as well...hope you do survive man. Hang in there.

Remember how poorly gas engines ran in the 1970s after emissions controls were first introduced? V8s were producing 175 hp and running very poorly. Fast forward to the last 5 years, and gas engines produce 400+ hp, get great fuel economy, and produce very low emissions.

Development of diesel emissions control is like the 1970s for gas engines. It will take a few years, but I predict diesels will run great and produce low emissions, too.

If we are going down memory lane...
remember all the really high mpg diesels we had in the 80's?
Escorts, Rabbits, Chevettes and more???
Yeah between the big 3, big oil and yes the EPA they were all killed off.
Of course big Marketing and a terrible US consumer had a hand.

Haven we are well past the development stages for diesels....diesel engines currently produce almost zero emissions. Check out the chart below and you will see the massive reduction in NOx and PM that diesels have been mandated by Big Gov't to comply with.

The current issue...where does the EPA say enough is enough...yet we are gearing up for EPA13, 17 and 20....the ultimate goal of EPA and CARB is to put diesels out to pasture.

For some interesting reading look into the removal of all the emissions junk off the current Cummins engine. The same basic engine was getting 20+ a LOW tech version pushing a BRICK like my truck around....new truck.......gets about half the mileage!

We are not going to get diesel engine because they use less fuel, last longer, make more power, OH.....and there is at least a chance that you or some 'other' company could come along and make fuel for it. Right when bio-diesel was starting to get a SMALL foothold all of a sudden the EPA basically make it impossible to run biodiesel in the current engine. I have my own doubts on this....but I don't have 45K to go buy a new truck to test my theory.

It is flat insulting that we don't even get to make the choice as a consumer to make up our own mind....

Why does everyone hate oil companies?

I wish people's passion towards Big Oil etc would be directed towards Big Gov't...maybe things would change.

I have a choice not to support Big Oil, Big Milk, Big Pharma, Big Diapers....I MUST support Big Gov't.

Big Oil does not force diesel manufacturers to reduce emissions, Big Oil did not force ULSD down our throats.

I agree. Big oil receives less profit than any other manufacturer. But yet they are evil.
