Some one out there used the hand hold mount bolts on their Tacoma with a RAM mount, super clean! They mounted a Garmin GPSMAP 60cs (I think). I use the suction cup mount with my Garmin Nuvi just behind the dash gauge cluster. I also use a CF-28 with Overland Navigator and DeLorme Street Atlas, it sits in passenger seat till I save enough for the FJ ram mount.
Another good spot if you don't have switches installed is the painted panel on the left of the steering wheel, under the air vent.
Yes, it was Barlowrs...HERE
Is it legal to remove your rearview mirror altogether? And, I do believe CA does/did have a traffic law against obscuring the windshield. Might want to google up on it.
Here's some info:

i dont own an FJ but what model/brand of gps? i figure the size should help determine where to put it.
Have you considered the RAM mirror mate. Not sure, if this would obscure your vision in the FJ windshield.
This is my set up. I have since changed to a larger screen GPS (5inch) - all I needed to add was a RAM extension to clear the sun visors.
Good Point! I had always been under the assumption that as long as you had both drivers and passenger side mirrors, the rear view mirror could be eliminated. My father had an old truck that he had put a camper shell on that completely obstructed the use of the rear view mirror, is that any different? I suppose it could be similar to tinting the front windows...if they wanted to, they could cite you.
