Hi Engineer,
I might smooth it out a little more and that will do, I plan to weld protective ribs across it to prevent future damage.

Awesome idea mate!! they will act as cooling fins too, not that the front diff ever gets too hot...

Are the wheels 16 in. like the Orig. ones or larger?
I haven't found any 16" tires that can carry the rear axle wt. single in the US. Are these machined such that they could be used dual?

Hi eMULe,

I've recently been through this exercise and found Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac 315/75R16 were rated 127/124Q which I make out to be 1750kg rated for the rear singles (3500kg/axle 160kph, my placard required 3400kg/110kph for the rear). There was another couple of choices too but they were back-orders in the places I looked. I bought 6 from tirerack.com at USD234 each. In my case Fedex to Australia added $800 to the total but compared to tyre costs here that was still cheap imo.

I'd have loved the BFG Mud-Terrain T/A KM2 in 345/75R16, these were listed as 126P which would also scrape in but would need 16"x9.5"+ rims which I just couldn't find anywhere, the 315s recommend 8"-10" wide rims so should work on Alan's 16"x8"s.

Andy,
Thanks for the information. Those I can get local & not pay freight across the Pacific...
What wheels did you use? Are they the same front & rear? Installed like an outer dual on the rear.
I think I read about two sources in the US, but as I remember one went out of business due to the death of the owner.

eMULe,
I have my name down for 6 of Alan's when they come in. He reports they are right to run singles front and rear and have the track right, but best to check with him that I have it right. -Andy

I just checked the KUMHO website here in OZ and they also do a 315/75/16 MTKL71 tyre with a load rating of 127

If you wanted those tires specifically, (Duratrac) then good for getting what you want. Otherwise a 35x12.50 (in non metric size, but physically the same) is a very popular all terrain, mud terrain and off roading tire in the states. Very easy to find, tons of manufacturers and patterns to choose from, etc.

Not sure about weight ratings, but some quick checking reveals that a 35 x 12.50 x 16 tire from Interco/Super Swamper in their SS-M16 model has a rating of 3640 pounds. I would imagine that other tires this size would have similar ratings so that should not be an issue.

Additionally, there are many choices for wheels (bolt patterns, offset, style, etc) as 16" wheels are still pretty common here, though that is changing rapidly as trucks and SUVs move towards larger wheels and tires from the factory and in the aftermarket.

Are you getting 2 valve stems fitted to these rims to make it easier to adjust tyre pressure on the go? They sure look good.
