On highway MPG: around 21 in regular mixed driving
Off highway MPG: about 14 typically

Dude, Dave you have pretty much EXACTLY the drivetrain I'm building towards, although I think I'll go 4.88's instead of 5.29's. I need some of your thoughts in the thread I started about building a 22RE

Mine

1989 Toyota 4Runner
22RE (2.4 I4 Gasser)
5spd man.
246k on body and engine
33x10.50's
4.10's
5K something loaded (this can varry alot though)
18mpg hwy
13 around town maybe lower.

Mileage: 95,000km (60,000miles)
Tire Size: 285/75-16
Gearing: 3.73

Weight (if known or approx): empty: 8,000lb / with camper, 55 gal of fuel and gear: 9,500lb / full on expedition mode: 11,000+lb

On highway MPG: average 16-18 mpg (imperial gallons- figure about 10% less for US gallons) - best ever was 23mpg (imperial) prior to mods, empty, on flat freeway

Off highway MPG: average 15-16 mpg (imperial) worst ever was 12mpg

One thing I like about the diesel is that the mileage does not vary very much, loaded, unloaded, onroad or off I typically allow 15mpg when calculating my range

Gearing: stock 4.10's
Weight: curb ~5,500lbs
On highway MPG: 12-13mpg
Off highway MPG: 9-10mpg

My highway mileage is usually affected by the fact that I have a roof basket laden with stuff. When I ran 33x9.50 mud terrains, my mileage was marginally improved on highway.

@ 80+ I got about 17-18mpg if I kept it down around 60-70 I could get 20mpg no problem on fully loaded trips to Moab or the Rubicon. Off hiway I am guessing as I have never really checked it.
I hope my newer 96 will get close to that...

This truck has the best consumption of any vehicle listed per ton-mile, specifically 128 ton-miles per gallon. By comparison an 8000 lb diesel pickup getting 20 mpg gets 80 ton-mile/gal. A 4500 lb Toyota pickup getting 20 mpg gets 45 ton-mile/gal. My advice if you are down around 25-40: get a diesel. Fuel isn't going to get cheaper.

On highway MPG: 17 typically (best 19)
Off highway MPG: anywhere from 10 to 16 depending on terrain
- I almost never exceed speed limits, so my mileage is usually much greater than most youngsters who pass me going 85.
- Off-road, I'm usually crawling and the engine is idling unless climbing steep pitches or crossing deep sand.
- I do not have any bling on the outside of the truck such as roof rack, lights, monster bumpers and winches, bull bars, etc....All of my off-road gear fits nicely on the inside.
- External wind drag components only include sliders, front and rear skid plates and 3 inch lift.

- It's going to be interesting how you are going to make any kind of logical metrics out of all of this info when the people here have so many variations of equipment as well as driving habits and varied terrain.

I have documented nearly all of my gas purchases since getting my FJ and compiled some data. Hope this isn't more info than you're looking for!

The worst tank I've ever had was on 10/20/07, a run to Crown King. That tank was almost exclusively off road, including rock crawling, driving up a mountain, some seriously insane fast dirt driving, and 80mph on the highway leaving there - still pulled in 14.8mpg.

The FJ didn't see offroad until I moved to Tucson on 8/1/07. You can see the mileage before that point is a bit higher at 19.8mpg which was probably 50/50 city/highway.

After moving to Tucson I became a bicycle freak, and the FJ is literally only used for 4x4ing and going to the grocery store (about 2 miles). So since then I bet more than 50% of the miles are off road.

This is an average of about the last 6,000 miles, including long trips and city driving, and some 4-low time on the trips.

I've always been a bit anal about gas mileage. I keep MPG records on all my 4 wheeled vehicles (don't keep it on the bike because it's not practical) and have done so since I got a 1985 Toyota 4x4 pickup brand new in May of '85.

I bought a 1990 Mitsubishi Montero in May of 1992 with about 18k on it, and sold it in July of 1999 with about 147k. I think I went through 3 record books of MPG, maintenance and repairs (the little ones they sell at office supply stores.)

I not only record MPG, I record the date, the odometer reading, how many gallons I filled it with and how much I paid per gallon, so my records also give me a good record of gas prices as well as a record of how many miles I've been driving.

Used to be when I sold or traded a vehicle I'd leave the mileage book in the glovebox, thinking the next owner would use it, but then I realized that I'm the only person who really cares about this stuff so I started keeping them.

I've always thought that recording MPG was a good way of monitoring the health of the engine, driving habits, etc. If I see a sudden spike or a sudden drop, then I investigate further.
