harrop lockers

anyone use them in a 100?

this likely an ozzy question, but they will ship to the US, so they arnt unobtainium.

i've never been a fan of of the ARB, and since i'm contemplating 35's, i'm contemplating 4.88's, which means, since i'll be disassembling the axle anyway, i'm contemplating tossing in a locker.

for those not familiar, a Harrop is a licensed production eaton e-locker. i think the internals are pure eaton while the carrier is made in emerald city, oz. (or preston Victoria, i cant recall which)

Would love to hear more about this. I didn't know they made them for the 100 series. A few of the Bronco guys have the Eaton E-locker and are very happy with them.

My '99 with the weaker 2 pinion front diff needs an upgrade, I don't have any particular aversion to ARB but didn't know there were other options.

You must be kidding! In oz, you're looking at $2k minimum for any selectable locker, even the ones made by our own company's. $1335 is a steal

An ARB is $1020 shipped to my door. So the e-locker would be about $400 more when you factor in freight.

You could argue that not having to buy an air compressor would make up some of that difference, but the compressor is useful for other things as well as long as you go with one of the two slightly larger size units.

We have fitted two e lockers in the last week, one in the front of a toyota prado and one in a toyota hilux rear, we also have fitted dozens of air lockers and pro lockers, the e locker is by far the easiest to fit, the quality is excellent, it would be my choice.

Are there any advantages to the Eaton/Harrop over the ARB air locker? I looked at both today but the guy at the store recommended the ARB air lockers over the Eaton/Harrop (despite the ARB being cheaper, salesmen normally do it the other way around and reccomend the pricier product!).

ARB's are generally the strongest locker on the market, the only ones that outdo them come with sacrifice in other places. unless you have a personal beef with ARB i don't see any reason why you'd want to avoid their lockers, unless you're wanting to shy away from the compressor and air actuation. i will say that the diaphragm is much more reliable than electromagnets that require wiring run to the diff anyway.

most trucks setup for the offroad environment have onboard compressors these days anyways, id just go ARB

personal opinion

Yeah that was my own reasoning and the same as the guy trying to hock 'em to me. I was just wondering if there were any upsides, sounds like not many.

the way i look at it is, the ARB is built to reliably activate at 60MPH in a straight line. thats some impressive machine work and materials selection. reason enough for me

Hi Richard, the Harrop looks stronger than ARB and very easy to fit, the big advantage is no air leaks! the o rings are a constant pain, and ARB are certainly not bullet prove as the dealers would want you to believe, Harrop also have the advantage of offering you a truetrac or a elocker, the truetrac is ideal for general outback touring and the elocker for the mountain climbers.

the harrops are stronger, but with a 2uzhjffdfhjhj what the **** ever v8 i have, either are strong enough. it would be like arguing who is gonna beat the **** out of me more, Ali or Tyson.

on board air is a waste of space and complication compared to a co2 tank. i have both, i know. id much rather have my locker rely on electric than whole other system. i have a g wagon, the system goes from electric circuit board to engine vacuum valves with a vacuum pump assist to hydraulic amplifiers to a to a hydraulic slave cylinder pushing a fork that pushes a dog tooth sleeve"... its a real kick in the pants when youre on a hill, go to engage the front locker, that drops the vacuum enough to release the transfer case, which in turn signals the computer that its unlocked, which in turn is programmed not to allow rear or front lockers to lock with the transfer case unlocked, so it opens up your rear locker and youre now in 1 wheel drive on a cliff. i love a challenge, really, i do.

at this point, i'm real into "push a button and the magnet works". no hoses, no pumps, no bicycle cables to rust, not even a dumb toyota servo motor that WILL freeze.

btw, my price is 1250.00
