I ran a cowl hood on my last truck. The difference was very noticeable. Problem with that was all the heat released at the cowl means warm air in the vents for the interior. You could always cut a panel from a piece of sheet metal. Talk to some local hot rodders , they should be able tell you who in the area punches louvers. They're not usually more than a dollar or two per louver. That way you could have a custom shape or size that would suit your needs.
My 55 has them punched in. my opinion, it looks a little cleaner than the bolted on ones.
