We took our 1997 80 Series 45,000 km around Southern and Eastern Africa - it did experience some problems (blown radiator, seized front differential, A/C fan motor failed, and bearing failures resulting from non-OEM bearings used when the front differential was replaced). Still it was a great vehicle for the trip. We now have a 2016 Montero at home and a 2015 JK in Canada and appreciate the reliability of newer vehicles.

Time, money, and skill: I believe you need at least two of these three to properly maintain & enjoy older rigs of any stripe. Land Cruisers included. It took me a minute to figure that out…

I had to choose between selling my 60 and my 100. I chose to keep the 100 b/c it is more usable-& frankly-reliable on a day-to-day basis. Driving up I-70 towards Eisenhower is dangerous in the 60. And 4 cars is too many for me anyway; have another unmentionable SUV & a Nissan Frontier I daily. I dig the Frontier by the way…

I’ll likely never own another 60. Or 80. And definitely not a 55 or 40. I’ve gotten all that out of my system.

Well, MAYBE another 80…best LC I ever owned. Hell-best vehicle period I ever owned…

The market for 60 and 80 series LC's have definitely turned the majority of survivors into collectors vehicles with associated price increases for good examples that aren't clapped out.
My 60, series has evolved over the decades that I have owned it.

I bought this 62 from Arizona as it was rust free. Being Canadian, we deal with that oxidation shite constantly so this was a great purchase. The first thing I did was give away the 3FE and installed a 2H 6 cyl diesel and H55f 5 speed transmission. I took the gears from the auto t-case as they were 15% lower and then armored it a little. I drove it for 10 years and then installed a 12H-T turbo diesel and cable locking axles and this is how it sits today.

I built this truck to be my backcountry RV and wheeling rig and as such, it wears all of my good decisions and many of my bad ones! Only the bad ones show. Ironically, dented sheet metal takes away from its collectors value but I do not care as it is my key to the backcountry and I go where I want.
Anyway, this year, my wife and I completed a trip through Copper Canyon in north central Mexico with some friends. We 'overlanded' 2000 miles to begin our overlanding trip through copper canyon and then repeated that to come home to the Vancouver Canada area. This was a spectacular trip and a photo or two will be included here. I daily drive this truck as it is my swiss army knife of vehicles. If I need a truck, she pulls my trailer for whatever I am doing. If I go wheeling, it is in this rig. If I overland, this is my steed.

Have over 500k km and Still have and use it now that.
80's are not new or fast, but parts are still available.
I've reconfigured mine several times over the past 10 years.
In 2023 I was in Morocco and Sardinia.
I hiked in Morocco for 30 days in the spring of 2024 and in Central Asia for 2.5 months in the summer. The Land Cruiser HDJ80 performed flawlessly! Thank you for the experiences!
I am planning a Kola Peninsula tour in 2025.
I just bought an LC250, but the LC 80 is here to stay!

I daily, wheel and overland out of my 85 and it's been great but, just like others above said it takes money and time at the very least. I struggle all the time on how far am i willing to go with it but i love it and it'll always be in the family.

I went on a couple of backroad trips over the last year, but I realized my favorite parts of the trips were getting out to hike or paddle, and I found myself hesitant to drive 100-120 miles up to the mountains with the MPG of an 80 series. Most hiking trailheads are pretty accessible.

Living out of the truck for over a week in Moab and it's still a pleasure to drive. (except for the clogged fuel filter on Dome Plateau in the middle of a very hot day!)

I am like you now a days...I dont use my Lexus as I used to, however since I am a HIKER I use my vehicle to take me where I want to go. My vehicle is my home away from home and i go out for 2 to 4 weeks at a time. Looking for places to hike. Next month I a departing to North Rim Canyon and Hike the RIM to River to Rim in one day. Next Bryce Canyon followed by Moab where I will Hike Arches, Island in the Sky and will do the White Rim Trail in two days. Depending on how I feel I may make a stop at the Needles district ( Elephant Hill ) and a few Hiking trails. Love to keep my self busy and moving...however I am due to go to Vegas Twice in July ( i have always been into the entertainment world ) So i will be getting my rest and suntan on the pools! LOL. Oh! every year I love been at Vegas in their pools when they hit RECORD BRAKING TEMPERATURES! Yes I am crazy!!!

Still wheeling the old gal, nothing has changed except a new furry companion. He's new to me as of 1.5 years no, and has been an awesome companion. Beastie the 80 is where he prefers to nap when I'm tinkering on the driveway.
