Land Cruiser 100 to Jeep Rubicon Unlimited: Capability? Comfort?

Thanks Scott. I'll take a look. I thought deciding and negotiating would be the hard part. Not actually submitting the order.

At this rate, I'd rather wait until the alpine option goes away in July. And get a red one with tan leather and not much else. Use the money for more mods.

Checking back in. The dealer never placed my June 7th order because of the screwy Jeep ordering system. So I've been waiting for July 11th when you can order a Rubicon without the $700 Alpine stereo.

In that time, I've changed my mind about black. I think I'm going to get Expo (expedition) White again. Black fenders and hard top. It'll save a lot of hassle and is just way more practical for a Jeep that'll live in the SoCal sun and actually get used off road a lot. Also going to drop the connectivity package probably. I don't care $500 worth about bluetooth.

I think I sold my Land Cruiser today sight unseen for my asking price. So the Western Sierra trip it just completed will probably be my last trip in it. :'(
It's scary selling your rig before you can even put in the order for the new one. Looks like I'll be driving my friends White '95 LR Discovery in the mean time. Should make for a great Expo White brand comparison by the time the Jeep comes in. ha.

I suggest the white hard top, or your white Jeep isn't going to make a lick of difference.

I'm not really worried about heat. It never gets above 80 where I live. The interior temperature of the all black jeep we almost bought the same as the outside temperature after sitting in the sun all day.

The white is more for scratches and paint longevity.

Congrats on selling your rig!
Great picture with Superdog hanging out in the shade.
Are you sure you are going to give back the LR? Those are pretty awesome vehicles in their own right. :)

That Jeep you posted looks sweet.

You will love an unlimited. I suggest you look at other companies besides AEV. While AEV makes great products, other companies make products that are just as good if not better. Do your research so that you get exactly what you want. Companies like LOD, Shrockworks, EVo Manufacturing (excellent armor) ExpeditionONE, etc all make fantastic stuff. The 4 door makes for an excellent overland rig when set up properly. The ride is also very comfortable, provided you do your research when it comes to lifts/components and such.

Compared to my 100, this build is going to be minimalist. Keeping stock parts wherever possible, and using the lightest possible options. Except drawers. The weight seems worth it.

With so many options, Jeep builds can go off the rails really easily. I usually find myself liking the stock looking Jeeps the best. Stock with 35s....mmmm

Near-stock is probably the best for real overland expeditions. Lifts and eye-popping articulation is good for rock crawling and show & tell, but not covering large distances in dirt and mud.

Yep, KlausVanWinkle, If you want some ideas, shoot me a msg. I have my rig setup pretty well exactly like you want yours. Lightweight, full purpose overlander.

from the other post regarding the jeep vs. whatever, as soon as you get yours your in for a major s@$t storm from your crusier brethren...ha ha.

Rust does a body good.
That's not true. He's not saying a wrangler is the end all be all of overlanding. I'm sure Klaus will always be welcome in the cruiser world and on mud.

And I'll probably be back when we need room for more klaus's. If Toyota would build a removable top solid axle 4x4 that's smaller than a 100... Plus we all know the G-Wagen is the end all be all of overlanding. Just too expensive.
